Tremendous bursts in memory usage is usually due to an app with a memory leak (it erroneously keeps asking for more and more memory when its not needed or forgets to give back memory when its done). You can use MS Sysinternals to find it: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb469930
