[Anandtech] A Month with Apple's Fusion Drive - Page 2

That was an interesting article. One of the comments did say that adding an SSD to an Apple notebook in place of an optical drive triggered and allowed the Fusion algorithm to convert to this hybrid setup.

I was hoping there'd be an analysis of longevity, based on the fact that all data gets written to the SSD first before being transferred to the HDD (and then possibly being rewritten back based on frequency of use). Not to mention, the SSD can get filled significantly over 50%. I.e. performance deterioration as a function of some average writes per day or week. Hopefully an average user can get a couple years of use without a noticeable performance hit.

I can't wait for the day when I could put all 5 terabytes my storage on 2 A solid state array. and I think I will definitely do that if the technology ever comes down to 60 dollars per terabyte like you see with mechanicals.

sure it's not as sexy to carry around a server case with 12 hard drives but its no slouch

It's going to be a while before it is that cheap I would think. I mean we have been using HDD for near 20+ years now. (consumers that is)

Edit: A question to those who have utilized this. Is this simply a drop in option? Say if I were to put an ssd into by super drive slot, via the adapter, would I be able to enable it and the caching would take place? Or do I need a fresh install?

According to the article, it would recognize the SSD and offer to rebuild the Fusion array for you.

So it is a hybrid drive then?

Not sure what you are trying to say or dispute confused.gif

Good article.

It will work on any Mac with an SSD and a standard HDD.
It differs from SSD caching. Apple's fusion drive is effectively a 128GB paired with a hard drive and the OS manages which files are stored where. SSD caching uses the SSD solely to cache your most used files -- you don't get the extra space from the SSD.

It's caching with a fancy little algorithm.

I'm going to go and self harm when people start referring to caching/hybrids as 'fusion' drives in the same way I do every time I hear the word 'retina' to describe resolution

If I'm not wrong, Corsair actually did this quite some time ago. Corsair Accelerator I think it was called?

Retina refers to pixel density and the distance the device is used.

Any resolution can be retina, it just depends on the size of the screen and the distance it's meant to be used at.
