Random Shutdown/Restart.....Electrical Short?PSU?Mobo?[UPDATE: RMA TIME  ]

Ok guys, First off this will be a bit of a read. I will try to be as detailed and concise as possible but also try to keep it short and to the point

A few days ago I ripped my computer apart for a good cleaning. no problems with that what so ever. Cleaned her up nice and re-did my interior lighting as well. Everything came back together well, no issues at all.

Yesterday however, something did come up. While gaming, my computer randomly shut itself down. And would not come back on. the only way to restart it was to flip the PSU switch off and on, then hit the power button. everything came back on, i didn't think much of it....Until it did it again, and again. So i began to investigate...At first I thought it's my overclock, reset to stock, same issue. BIOS maybe? Flashed to the latest, same issue.

I then noticed a bit of a trend, if it shut itself down, if i touched or moved the side panel(the one on the hardware side) it would power back on by itself, or at least attempt to.....Interesting, I figured it must be short somewhere along the case. Fiddled for a few hours then came to a conclusion that it must me my LED strip. I had snipped it to shorten its length a tad, and there was a barely visibly amount of the circuit strip showing. Figured that it must have been enough to cause a short with my side panel. And with where it sat in my case(up against the lip that the side panel locked into) it surely seemed like a feasible explanation. I removed the strip, All went well for the rest of the night.

The computer did the same thing today. While gaming, it randomly shut itself down or randomly restarted itself. Today however, it only happened when i ran my overclock. And only while gaming. If i reset to stock settings it will run as it should. If i did anything other then gaming it ran perfectly fine. I though it might be a temp issue. However I had HwInfo log all my computers information while gaming and when the shut down happened.

All of my temps are in check.

Cores never went passed 43C
Socket never went passed 41C
NB never went passed 54C(from all the information i have gathered since i bought this board, that is a normal temp while gaming)
GPU never went passed 63C
VRM heatsink never went over 118F ( took a temp gauge and pointed at the HS while running prime95 with my overclock)

Do you think it might be a short somewhere with the case? Something grounding where its not suppose to?
Could it be my motherboard? VRM issues maybe?
PSU maybe? How di my PSU voltages look in the logs below?

TempLog.CSV 447k .CSV file
templog2.CSV 2303k .CSV file
templog3.CSV 473k .CSV file

At this point in time I am at a loss. I can game only at stock settings. But I can do anything and everything else with my overclock no problem. I have yet to tear the machine apart once more to inspect everything as I don't have the time for it right now( will have time to do so on Tuesday)

I could really use some help with this. Anyone that has any clues as to what it may be, please help.

EDIT: Here's one more thing I noticed. While gaming with my overclock, if I have my cellphone connected to the front panel USB port to charge, I keep getting the windows sounds that play when a removable device is either plugged in or unplugged Continuously. Its like plug, unplug, plug...........unplug........plug, unplug, and doesn't stop. until I either stop gaming or actually unplug my phone from charging.

EDIT Again: The random restarts now happen during stock settings as well.

PSU or Mobo problem. It's power related. You'll need to try a different PSU to isolate which one it is.

The only other psu I have is a generic 400w ultra PSU. And i doubt it has enough juice to power my system at stock. let alone with an overclock.

On tuesday I wil rip apart the stystem and put it back together to see if that does anything. If it doesn't solve anything, I will try my good ole' Asus M4A88TD-V EVO in place of my Crosshair V and see what happens. I'm really hoping its the PSU and not the motheboard.

Does anyone else have any clues as to what the problem might be? Can anyone take a look at the files I attached and let me know how my PSU voltages look?

will it really? I mean this isnt a name brand 400w( that is if its actually a 400w) When i pulled the spec page for it, it runs 20a on the +12v rail. And with what I know EVGA states you need at least 38a on that for the gtx460. I don't know if I should chance that and have the psu blow up on me.

I have thus far filed an RMA with corsair for my PSU, but will still do a teardown and rebuild on tuesday to see what I can come up with.

If theres anyone else out there that may have some insight please don't hesitate.

I had the exact same situation ! And it was my powersupplie which was the problem.

I have i7 2600k 3,4@4,5

7970 2gb OC

with custom watercooling smile.gif
AX750 Corsair <- Which was the problem.

I have now changed to a Enermax 1200 watt, MAXrevo, and everything works perfectly now !!

Good luck thumb.gif
