Which slot on Z77 board for single GPU?

Hi guys,

Probably a very simple / stupid question, but which of the 2 PCI E slots do I need to plug my single HD5850 graphics card into? I have the AsRock Z77 Extreme 4 board.

On my last board it was the lower socket with a VGA switch card in the top slot. But with this card it doesn't seem to say on the motherboard.

Thanks,
Rich

The slot closest to the CPU.  This is generally thought of as the main slot (or sometimes the "first" slot).  Even so, there are a few people who have a board similar to yours who ended up having to use the 2nd slot because it didn't work in the first.  So, try the first slot and go from there.

genrally you would just use the first slot with that board. pretty much all newer boards first slot is PCIe X.X x16.

what do you mean by this statement? is this what is happening on the z77?
