Am I bottlenecking? Unlocked Phenom II with a 7770

I know these kinds of threads are asked a lot, but I am seriously wondering, because I'm not getting the kind of performance I want on my current PC setup. I think it is my CPU slowing me down. Sorry if this is in the wrong section.

Here are my current specs:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 B55 OC @ 3.8GHz
  • - This is unlocked from a Phenom II X2 555 BE @ 3.2 GHz, so I wouldn't say it is a true quad core. Here is the CPU-Z screen below, while running Prime95.
  • - I also noticed the speed fluctuating (clock speed) while running Prime95... not sure if this is a normal thing or not. (I mean it doesn't max out at 3.8Ghz, it jumps around) Usage is at 100%.
  • - Temps are perfectly fine. I can't see the "official" temps of the CPU because it is unlocked, but I can see it via HWMonitor, and it stays below 40c.

GPU: MSI R7770-PMD1GD5 Radeon HD 7770 @ 1000/1125MHz
MB: ASUS M4A785-M
RAM: 6GB DDR2 (Pretty sure it is at 800MHz)
PSU: Corsair CX600 (600w Power Supply)

My question is, am I bottlenecking with my current setup? I get very low framerates in certain games that I should be fine playing otherwise, such as Battlefield 3. I've already tinkered with the settings and all, but the lower the graphics, the worse it is, or it doesn't even make a difference. Other games that run terribly include Sleeping Dogs, Bad Company 2, GTA IV, and NFS Most Wanted 2012. I realize these games utilize different game engines and can affect how they run, but still... I thought a 7770 was good enough for these games. I can run Crysis 2 @ Maximum, averaging 40 FPS.
- Most of these games use my GPU at 100%, and the CPU usage sort of depends on what game it is. On BF3, the CPU is being used at like 80%.

I am planning to upgrade to the following, hoping it would increase my performance:
CPU: AMD FX-8150 3.6GHz 8-Core Processor
  • - I realize AMD isn't at it's best right now, but honestly, it fits my budget at the moment.
  • - I WOULD go for an Intel MB and a 3570K, but that simply does not fit my budget...

RAM: Kingston HyperX Blu 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1333 Memory
MB: ASRock 970 Extreme3 ATX AM3+ Motherboard
(http://pcpartpicker.com/p/w1mr)

Sorry for the long thread, but this has been bothering me for a while. Am I bottlenecking? Will the future upgrades improve my performance significantly? WIll I bottleneck with the new parts?

Thanks.

Eh...I'm using 965 oc'd to 4ghz with 7950, and I don't really feel the limit of bottlenecking.

I mean, I'm sure it's there to a certain degree, but in my case, GPU handles most of the pressure.

But then, what do I know? I'm a total noob to this computer thingymajiggy.

Hell no you are still very far from bottlenecks. It is fine...

most likely the case here.

Aside from power consumption, 7770 performs close to 5770, and I've been running 5770CF, and can't manage great framerate on most new games anymore.

I wasn't willing to lower the resolution, so I upgraded to 7950, and seems like that solved all the performance issues.

What he said. No bottlenecks. Just focus on GPU upgrade next time.

HD 7770 is an entry level card in the HD 7000 series. this card is only capable of playing at medium - high settings without MSAA in modern DX11 games like BF3, Sleeping Dogs. first of all check if your CPU overclock is stable. if you really want to play the latest games at max settings upgrade to a HD 7950 boost / HD 7950 OC.

secondly for gaming a core i5 with H77 motherboard is better than even an overclocked FX-8320 with 970 motherboard.

core i5 3450 - 189

if you want AMD i suggest you go FX-8320.costs USD 164. the piledriver core is 10% faster than bulldozer at the same clocks.

Thanks for the links... the problem is... I can't even run BF3 at LOW at 60 FPS, I can't expect it to run at medium-high. Honestly, it has been fluctuating... some days I get perfect framerate (to me that is 60 FPS) at higher graphics, some days I get lower FPS on lower graphics. This is on the same maps with the same amount of people. It seems the the lower I put the graphics, the worse it is... because it isn't using my GPU at 100%, causing even more framerate issues.

While playing Sleeping Dogs, my CPU usage was at 100% while my GPU usage was at around 70%, and this was on higher settings as well, and I averaged around 50 fps depending on where I was.

I don't know if what I'm saying is even valid, but this is my personal experience on how things have been with a 7770 and a unlocked dual core processor.

And yes, the overclock is stable and has been for a while now. If I put it back to 3.2 GHz, it would seem like it would be too slow and I would have an actual bottleneck on my hands.
