5830 suddenly overheating 90C and LOUD!

Thread Starter
My PC recently went bang when I pulled the plug (SSD doesn't seem to like that) so after a clean install of Win7 Ultimate x64 which has been running for around a week now. Suddenly today the fan kept going really fast then back down. It fluctuates like this constantly, its really annoying. I've looked and my temps are at 90C when idle! Surely thats far too high (I dont even have aero theme on lol). Its far too annoying being so loud and I want to know what the prob is and if i need a new card, only had this one around 1/1.5 yrs and hardly game at all! TO be clear it was fine for the first few days of this clean install.

Phenom II 940 @ stock (3ghz)
6gb ram 800mhz
XFX 5830 (stock - but apparently is OC edition)
128gb M4
GX650W

Does this mean I have a faulty card?

Thanks

Hello,
I strongly suggest you test the card in a known working system. I say this because I believe your card might have become damaged when you pulled the plug. It does not happen often, but when it does, this sort of thing is a result of it.
So, by testing the card in another system, this will tell you if the card IS the issue for sure.
I think it is!
Hope this helps and sorry for this unwanted news.
Bradley.

Hi Bradley

Thanks for the help but as I stated it has been working for nearly a week AFTER the plug pull. I reset a few times and had a look at BIOS settings and eventually it all seemed to be solved when I updated the Vision control centre! (Despite it working with the one I currently had for 5 days (incidently it was a 5 day old install of Vision centre so pretty recent!)) Anyway I updated it and it cooeld right down! V strange!

Thanks once again Brad

Well, I just wanted you to test in another machine to see if you have a hardware or software issue. Glad it is working.

Wake up this morning to find once again it it seems to be at full load yet i spent around 7 hours on it (after restarts) and it was fine! Seems the GPU is faulty. No other system to test it on unfortunately frown.gif

Do you have a mate with a decent system you could test the card on?

OK wow I have just made an observation. Basically When I boot Win7 my GPU will start to fry, then if I roll back drivers it cools right down and calms so I then reset Win7 with these old drivers. Once it boots back up it starts going crazy again even with the rolled back drivers!? So I update the drivers to the latest and once again, it all cools down. So I reboot, and boom it overheats again! WHAT THE HELL. Its just a viscous circle in which I would effectively have to change my drivers each time and YOYO between current and roll backs every time I boot!!!

This seems VERY strange.

BUMP

Now found out that my GPU goes to 95%+ load when idle so as soon as i boot. 840/1125 and as soon as I change the drivers it drops down to the normal loads of 0% (while just on desktop etc) however at 300/157. (This i assume due to driver change). So yea 100% load for nothing. Tried re-installing catalyst etc, Still no idea.
