Arch File Server?

Thread Starter
So I am thinking of building a file server using an HP Elite desktop I am getting for free (980x powered 9gb memory matx board 2 1tb HDD's). I dabbled with Linux for about a year or two mostly with Arch. I feel like I know Arch well enough to get started and would prefer to use Arch over another distro unless there is something I am missing.

I want to be able to share files and stream movies to every device everyone in the house has. This includes well everything: 2 Windows 7 pcs, 1 Windows 8 pc, 1 imac, 1 iphone,2 ipads, 3 android phones,2 android tablets and 1 Chromebook. What would be the best way to set this up on both ends? It's most important that I get my own stuff working (I have android devices, a windows 8 pc and chromebook) but it would be nice if everyone could use it. This will only be used on the local network don't want to hassle with the more advanced security needed for outside stuff yet. I'll also need to set it up so I can ssh to the server from my own devices.

You can use Arch as a file server (I used to do just this myself), but personally I'd recommend FreeBSD and use ZFS on your disks. I know you said you didn't want to try other distros/OSs, but ZFS is pretty awesome and Arch is probably more akin to FreeBSD than it is like Ubuntu.

Regardless of that OS you'd choose, I'd recommend installing Samba for SMB (aka Windows file and printer sharing). This will allow your Windows PCs to see your file server file systems as if they were local disks (you're probably familiar with UNC paths? eg \\server-ip\share-name\folder\path )

Getting the phones to work will be a little more tricky. You might be best of with a uPnP/DNLA server which can stream audio and video to your handsets. MediaTomb is one of the best servers (that I've used), but -quite frankly- nearly all DNLA servers suck bad if you want transcoding (depending on the age of your phones - this may not be an issue).

Lastly, getting OS X to talk to your file server. You have two options:
1: NFS (which is UNIX's equivalent of SMB), which OS X will natively support...or
2: installing a SMB client on the mac.
I don't own any Macs though, so I couldn't advise which is easier to set up

Ok so there is no samba client I can find for chromebooks. Not a deal breaker but still.

Also I have some extra 8gb( 4gb x2) corsair vengeance memory...would it be beneficial to upgrade the memory at all or should I just leave it?

I know you're probably going headless and most of the server stuff is beyond me but maybe you could find some way to use Chrome's built in remote client for access on the Chromebook?

PS: I wish I knew how you get your Intel CPUs for free. First in another thread you mention getting the Xeon for free and now the 990x...I'm jealous. sad-smiley-002.gif

Actually I paid $400 for the Xeon just got a decent deal on it. A friend of mine had bought it for a workstation, but decided to upgrade to a bigger Xeon. The 980x is free though. tongue.gif It's nice to have generous family that's into computers and upgrades a lot.

Hmmm, you might be better off running Subsonic for serving media then as it has a web interface which can be used on the chromebook.
In fact there's nothing stopping you running both a uPnP/DNLA daemon and Subsonic, even though their functionality do over lap.
