13.X's and downsampling... not working anymore, on purpose?

Thread Starter
As some who may use downsampling may know... it does not work with the new drivers. I'm wondering if anyone is savvy enough to look into it and see if this is something that was done on purpose by AMD? There have been cases of this done before... with ATI tray tools and then getting rid of the .dll's to allow MSI AB to work... plus other OC apps.

I hate the fact that nvdia supports DS on it's own and we get stuck with ANOTHER feature that the competition has, that is not natively supported by AMD. Well I guess that would be the case, since AMD can't even release basic properly working tools. (ie the uninstaller breaking people's Win8 installations)

So here is some info on how downsampling was being done previously: http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=366244

Now the ADL library that was allowing the change to happen... doesn't seem to be the same. So it does not allow the new resolution to work.

This is how I got it to work for me:

Here's a quick update on how to get it working... do not use any extra tools for cleaning the drivers for the time being. At least until the specific registry files that need to be retained for custom resolutions is found.

Make sure you have the 12.11s installed or any other driver before the 13.1s. Then also make sure that you have set the resolutions you wish to use and that they are working.

Optional: To make it even more secure of causing future issues with stray files.... clean up whatever drivers you have currently installed and do a fresh install of the 12.11 betas. Then get your resolutions you want working.

Then, I simply used the AMD uninstaller from the programs and apps to uninstall the 12.11 betas (or your current driver) and then install the 13.1s... it will retain all of yoursettings and now have the 13.1s and downsampling working!

Option 2 thanks to CeeJay... the dev of SweetFX. thumb.gif BUT! Did not work for me. So use at your own discretion.

I used a program called Custom Resolution Utility (CRU)

It doesn't care what driver version you're running because it works by overriding the monitor EDID in the windows registry.
I just succesfully used it with Catalyst 13.1

It's very easy to use:

1) Start CRU
2) Add a detailed resolution (note that the first detailed resolution will be your monitors standard resolution)
3) Set timing to Automatic - Best for LCD (if you have an LCD of course)
4) Enter your custom resolution and refresh rate
5) Press OK
6) Press OK again to apply your changes and exit CRU
7) Reboot

When you have rebooted and are back in Windows you can use your new resolution(s)

The pixel clock patcher you can find on the same website as CRU also looks interesting. I'm wondering if they might help us use very high custom resolutions that would normally not be possible?

The application needs to be updated for the new drivers.

use 12.11 until he updates it (if he does)

That program is to force resolutions on monitors that are not supported is not the same as the downsampling tool..

With CRU you are overclocking the monitor..
For example to force 120hz on 3d HDTVS... or to force 120hz or higher res on some computer monitors..

Ok...this is how to force Ati Downsampling Utility able to work with 13.1 drivers (at least it works for me just fine):

1. If you have 13.1 version installed - uninstall it; uninstall all AMD software and drivers through Windows "Programs and Features"; after reboot use Official AMD Catalyst Un-install Utility to clean up.
2. Fresh install Catalyst 12.11 betas (i was trying those). After reboot set downsampling resolutions as you did as usual for your preferences. Check if it works correctly. Reboot.
3. Uninstall (again) all AMD software and drivers through Windows "Programs and Features"; after reboot use Official AMD Catalyst Un-install Utility to clean up. BUT don't remove or delete any settings or registry entries of AMD downsampling tool.
4. Install Catalyst 13.1. Reboot.
5. Downsampling should work as normal with previously saved settings, but can't allow you to adding new ones.

EDIT:

Just check it - no need in uninstall process via Windows "Programs and Features" anymore...Official AMD Catalyst Un-install Utility destroys any AMD software, drivers and reg-entries in OS...like ALL and completely, but keep DU tool strings

Ill be back testing this

You're right.

I could not get it to work for me. Might work for others... so I'll put the way I am getting it to work right now as before.

Is this method with cru safe to use ?
It works for me.

Will it damage my monitor?

u2312hm (23" dell ips) here

using 13.2 beta6 and german downsample tool does not work (and I dont want to reinstall drivers).

edit: nevermind. It actually didnt worked.... Installed 12.11 and applied 1440p with downsamplegui0.6. uninstalled, installed 13.2 and it works. Hard reset looks jaw dropping !
