Is it safe to shut off the pump ?

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

In my quest for ultimate silence (and cooling), I was wondering if it was safe to shut off the pump when the temperatures are low . In my case, when doing web browsing, listening to music and other non CPU consuming things, my CPU remains at ~40°C with only passive cooling (no fans, no pump). But I'm afraid that having the pump shut off and then turn on again when temps arise could be dangerous for the pump itself.

My idea is to have everything controled by PWM (using Asus Fan XPert 2) and have the pump turn on only when the CPU temps rise above 45°C.

Thanks by advance,

Eric.

PS : By the way, the pump would be an MCP655-PWM.

In my opinion the pump is safe providing its got fluid in it. Problem is you have a copper block bolted to your CPU which will conduct heat but with no fluid circulation you run the risk of cooking your CPU because the heat has no where to go, given that it has no fins or real surface area like a passive heatsink does. Personally I wouldn't turn it off, I would just turn it down low.

I suggest you get the. Koolance D5 vario. As per Martin's tests, it is the most quiet out there. Set on speed 1# and properly decoupled, you will never hear it. Best way to decouple a pump is to not mount it to anything. Just let it hang by it's two hoses and no vibrations will be transmitted to your case, hence quieter.

With what you suggest, within a few seconds of the pump being turned off, the CPU block will start to get hot and your pump will start again. You can get used to a constant regular noise much better than an intermitant one.

Actually, the MCP655-PWM is considered by Martin as even quieter than the D5 Vario, but I agree the difference is negligible :

http://martinsliquidlab.org/2012/12/25/swiftech-mcp-655-pwm-drive-pump-review/7/

However, you're probably right when you say that we can get used to a constant regular noise much better than intermittant one. But in the end do you think that shutting the pump off is dangerous for the pump ? I agree this could be dangerous for the CPU/GPU if fan control is not set correctly, but I'll remain very conservative with my settings...

Goid find, I guess that pump was tested after the last time I read his reviews. This one was tested just 3 weeks ago.
No, I dont think it would damage the pump to have it turned on and off.
With PWM, you can have that pump dialed down to a ridiculous 800 rpm. You will never hear that. So why bother to turn it off completely?

Thanks for your answer, in fact I don't have the pump yet, and if it is inaudible at 800 rpm (with right decoupling) like you suppose, I'll probably never stop it at all. But just in case, I'm happy it should not be dangerous for the pump itself.

Again, thanks a lot, I'll update this post when I finally get my hands on the pump - the French postal services are slow as hell (2 days for the pump to cross the Atlantic, probably five days to cross France mad.gif ) but I hope it will be there by the end of the week.

I wouldn't decouple anything, those D5 Varios are almost completely silent at max RPM.

i just switched from the MCP355 to the vari MCP655 (D5 ), at the speed step 1, the pump is in fact inaudible. i dont have it decoupled or anything, just sitting on the bottom of my case. it comes with a like soft foam rubber pad type thing, its sitting on that, but thats it. i leave mine at 1.

I would not suggest turning the pump off. I have accidentally done this a few times over the years. Every time the computer shuts off from hitting the temperature max. So in my opinion you need to keep it running while it is on.
