Should I Upgrade? (GTX 460) - Page 2

Yeah my PSU is that one in the link.

Gah im conflicted. The reason im debating this is long story short, I have 100 bucks from a gift card i was given for amazon, and its burning a hole in my pocket.

I dont want to go past my 200 ish budget but i feel like I don't need such a substantial upgrade at the same time. Maybe i should hold on till the new generation of cards are released then buy a 7870 or something?

I mean i play a lot of PC games but im not always throwing them up to max settings during most of my gaming.

Im playing most games @ 1080 maxed with no AA, A few games had to bump down to 1680c1050 with a GTS 450. I think your fine for a while to be honest. I play on my dads 55" Sony bravia sometimes so i just ordered a 6870. I think you should be fine if everything is running okay at 1080. I dont see a need personally for AA at that res.

since you have a 100 dollar gift card for amazon go for the sapphire HD 7870 XT. sell your GTX 460 for 90 - 100 bucks. should be possible. throw in the extra 70 bucks. its a massive upgrade. you mentioned playing shooters.

BF3 multiplayer at 1080p requires you to overclock this HD 7870 XT to 1.1 Ghz to run at avg 60+ fps at 1080p Ultra 4x msaa. also about using the gpu power don't worry Crysis 3, the GPU killer is coming next month. Metro Last light coming in march will also push any high end graphics card to its limits.

you would in fact be kicking yourself for not going for HD 7950 OC. thumb.gif

Someone suggested, i could always just buy up to a GTX 560 from Evga, and use the upgrade program to my benefit.
(Can't do it with the 460 i have since when i bought it, it got lost in the mail for a month, imagine my anger when it showed up a day after the 30 day sign up.)

a GTX 560 is not a serious upgrade. you need a card which is atleast twice the performance of GTX 460 to make it worthwhile to upgrade. Sapphire HD 7870 XT does that perfectly. anyway think and decide. thumb.gif

I can offer a bit of advice. My back up rig is similar to your sig rig. The 460 dose ok at gaming right now. Its one of my fav GPU's but its days are very numbered. It would be worth it to jump to a 78XX or even better a 79XX card, even if you are happy with the performance. The newer card will last a lot longer before game's start to strain it.

don't base your purchase on rebates. for 30 bucks more the sapphire HD 7870 XT (tahiti le) will offer you atleast 12% - 15% more performance at the same clocks as hd 7870 (pitcairn). also with future games like crysis 3 and metro last light the faster 6 ghz memory on hd 7870 tahiti le is definitely worth it. also sapphire is a better brand than his. the dual x cooler is one of the best custom coolers.
