SLI - how does it render?

Hi,

I'm getting a 1440p monitor and I already have a smaller 1080p monitor. I have a 570, but the vram is only 1.25 - not good for 1440p. I know SLI won't double the vram, but from what I understand (correct me if I'm wrong), card1 would render 1/2 the lines, card2 would render the second 1/2 - meaning card1 & card2 each only have to handle 720p and one of the 570s can also drive the current 1080p.Since 570 can easily handle 720p with 1.25 vram, the vram (and even overall horsepower) wouldn't be an issue. Is that how SLI works?

Not necessarily. Your GPU still has to load all of the textures, that's what takes up VRAM. You can test this by modding skyrim and loading several textures on top of each other. It will eat vram like crazy. Both GPU's still have to load the textures.

so my best bet is to get a card with more VRAM? In that case, what card should I get to run a 1440p monitor? Is there 1 card out now with enough vram to support 1440p at high / max settings?

Also, I apparently don't get how SLI works. Its not for the rendering, is it for the displaying what is rendered, such as 120hz, 3x monitor, or 3D?

That's SFR rendering which really isn't used today for Direct3D apps.

Most commonly AFR, each card will render alternate frames, so card 1 renders frame 1, card 2 renders frame 2, etc.
