Nailing down cat6?

Thread Starter
Can I use U-nails/staple nails to hold down cat6? My concern is that it will cause less throughput for downloading, i usually get a steady 3.7 MB/S when downloading games on steam but since i used the U staples from Ace its not been that high.

I wouldn't do anything that noticeably pins the cable down or pinches it. I've had great luck with those nails which have a plastic attachment for holding down coax. Most electronic stores carry them, and they're dirt cheap. As for reducing performance, network cables tend to either work or not. It sounds like you're talking about WAN (internet) speeds as well, since Gigabit Ethernet (which nominally "requires" CAT6) can push well above 100MB/s. If that's the case, then I would look elsewhere for the source of your issue. Cable company overselling bandwidth in your neighborhood? Neighbor's kid busted into your WiFi for some Torrent action? Bad weather + old phone lines = slower DSL? You get the idea. A quick SNR check on your modem might yield some clues.

How would pinching the cable harm it? I feel as long as the wire are still completing the circuit then there shouldn't be a problem. Just curious. Also how would i do an snr check on my modem? I have a Arris wbm760a.

If you've ever peeled a network or phone cable (typically one does this to put a new connector on it or split a long cord into two shorter ones) then you'll notice they have sets of twisted wires. This prevents interference (EMI) as the pairs are twisted at slightly different rates. An unfortunate side effect of this is that network cables are sort of lumpy if you will. Pinch or even bend them hard enough in the wrong spot and you can create a lot of pressure on one or more of the 8 individual wires inside (which may sever one of the wires, or just lead to a weak spot which will break later). Those are solid core copper wires, so they don't deal well with compression. Then again, you could get away with it just fine. I've seen whole offices where CAT5/6 cables are stapled to rafters prior to dropping down to patch panels. I guess I just tend to err on the side of caution. A $30 cable tester is well worth the peace of mind in my opinion if you have to do that sort of thing often, but I'm getting off track...

If it's coax then you have Cable, not DSL. In that case I would say overall usage in your neighborhood is more likely the issue (rather than weather). You can log into your cable modem and check your SNR (signal/noise ratio). Just write down your current reading and check it again in a day or two (assuming the weather is different) and compare the two. Not sure what's normal for your area, but if you call and complain about slow or intermittent connectivity, sudden-link should have you check the SNR and they can tell you if your reading is within acceptable range for your area.

There are 8 copper wires, each copper wires is wrapper in a plastic shield. All 8 wires are wrapped in additional main plastic shield as well.

So if you are experiencing signal degradation, then there is a puncture.

So for a 256QAM setup an SNR of at least 33 is typically recommended. Your signal is not exactly wonderful, but it's well within the bounds of what is considered acceptable by most providers. You might try to see if you can fully saturate that gigabit connection by plugging a second rig into your router (please tell me you aren't hooking your machine naked up to the interwebs). If you have a set of SSDs or even a decent HDD on both ends you should have no trouble saturating a gig-E link. Remember this too, if your second rig is a laptop with a very slow HDD you can plug a handful of USB drives into it and then pull from the attached drives as well as the internal to create enough of a datastream to see if your main rig has a good connection. I would consider anything north of 100MB/s to be just fine, as 125MB/s is the theoretical limit and you'll have a bit of overhead (since you'll just be using SMB for the file transfer).
