AMD FX 4100 idle temp help :(

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I built my PC in December 2011 with a fx 4100 on a gigabyte 990fxa ud3 and idle temps were fine with stock cooler and viewing temps with speed fan shwed a temp of ~35C idle and ~55C 100% with prime95. Now, about a year from purchase my idle temp is ~50C and max is above 60C (i stopped prime 95 cos i don't know if +60 was safe) so i bought a hyper 212 evo + arctic silver 5 and temps have changed to idle:45C max:57C with speed fan and that does not seem right considering people are getting much better temps - its not the max temp i worried about its the idle cos i don't want my CPU constantly running at 45C. Things get even more confusing for me when i use coretemp to view temps and i get idle:10C and max:35C which seems incorrect as my room temp is ~25C and is an extreme difference from my speed fan temps.

temps at prime95 100%:

Thanks in Advanced

I wouldn't bother with the 'min" temp in CoreTemp. The minimum temp isn't your idle temp. Just keep track of what the "CPU #0" temp is on idle, this temp should be displayed in your taskbar when CoreTemp is minimized. Run your processor at load and look at the "CPU #0 temp again to see how hot it runs.

Did you mount the cooler correctly? You could have used too much or too little thermal paste.

on idle:

(i reckon the 'not so low' cpu usage is because of the tool i used to screen shot it was all below 10% before and after i had taken the shot)

on prime95 for 5 minutes:

idle:13C max:35C - does this sound about right for a fx4100 with hyper 212 evo + arctic silver 5?

I reckon that i have seated the cooler correctly (the screws are as tight as the thread allows - is this to much pressure?) and i used a rice grain in volume of paste and it appears as though it spread well.

Does "too little" paste mean that there was not enough paste to spread to the edges of the die or does there need to be a certain amount of compound for optimized heat reduction?

Thanks

The only ways to correctly measure an AMD's idle temp is using a temperature sensor or a inferred thermometer.

AMD's sensors are not real sensors, and it only gives you a rough estimate of temps at idle, but its pretty accurate at calculating load temperatures.

Your temperatures are fine, don't worry about it.

Oh and try to monitor your temperatures using AMD's overdrive. The max temperature for Bulldosers are around 60-70C, not the 90C labeled on core temp.

Also your CPU does not take up the entire die, its usually just a small square or rectangle in the center.

are you talking about the AMD vision engine control centre cos i can enable AMD overdrive but i dont have any sort of 'option' to to view cpu temps/volts/frequencies - the closest thing to it is 'cpu power' which lets me change the cpu speed

Download THE AMD Overdrive. The Vision Control Center is mainly for the GFX.

http://download.amd.com/Desktop/aod_setup_4.2.3.exe

Here is the actual over drive. The temperature, frequency, and voltage is in the top left tab I believe.

Just installed 'THE' AMD overdrive you suggested and it appears to be the most realistic in terms of temps: 21C on idle and 42C on prime95 - i think i have fixed my problem and id like to thanks you guys for all your help thumb.gif
