Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch - Is now released - Page 3

Bought it Friday and decided to start playing it today, was finishing Hitman Absolution first.

Once I started I lost track of time, before I knew it five hours had passed and I was done with round one of Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Ding Dong Dell.

It's really hard for me to get into games nowadays, I have the attention span of a kitten surrounded by 50 different balls of yarn, but this game has no problems keeping me enthralled.

that is completely understandable, but studio Ghibli isn't going to release something that isn't readily available to a wider range of ages than the 14+ and M titles allow for... i see this game as really being something for the older fans of these movies/games, while introducing a new generation to something that is a callback to earlier generations of RPGs.

For those worried, the combat system is actually superb. I was a bit worried myself before I bought it.

It successfully combines the Kingdom Hearts, Tales series, and Pokemon battle system into something that actually works, and it works extremely well.

It also has a Pokemon collection/leveling system, but you can completely ignore it if you want to and still beat the game.

It's a pretty solid game, but it has a few problems. It's probably the easiest JRPG that I've played, and the AI is just horrible. Luckily, I've never actually died on a boss, so the AI is good enough. However, I would have preferred a solid and much more customizable AI with difficult bosses. The attack and defend commands you get a little ways in the game help some, but not a lot. The story is actually heartwarming and makes you care for Oliver which is very rare for me in JRPGs.

Got a question regarding the bosses at the end. Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
So I beat Shadar, but I was barely able to do it, I have spent nearly all my potions and all my Pheonix Feathers. But I'm stuck at Ding Dong Dell with no way to go to another twon to buy any of this stuff. Am I ****ed? I really don't want to re-fight Shadar if I don't have to. Will there be any chance to buy any potions or Pheonix Feathers after this point? Also, how many bosses are left? I'm not sure if I have enough money right now to buy enough potions for more than maybe 1-2 bosses.

Thanks.

Thats very unfortunate to hear as JRPGS pride them self on being difficult games that require grinding and it's what puts the J in JRPG in my opinion. It's also the main thing that convinced me to not buy this game. Which is that it's too easy and not challenging enough. Pretty sad that they're dumbing down JRPG games now too.

Whatever happened to RPGS actually challenging you?

Looks like I'm off to buy Dark Souls for the PS3 (Can't stand playing it on the PC).

You will have to fight the cat king before your able to buy any potions. He isn't hard with the right setup but takes awhile to bring him down. If possible try to use lower cost spell to save on mana and remember the other sage is good at magic too.

I believe you have another 4 bosses before the end boss, counting the ding dong dell boss

I finished the game. Was a little on the easy side to me. I didn't really have to work to hard to past anything. This game has so much potential but a few glaring flaws makes the question the 9-10 rating so many places give it.

1) Tactics don't offer nearly enough choices nor does it make the best decisions. Even if I sit them to heal they will still sometimes allow my hp to slowly drain to nothing even though they have mana.

2) AI boss fights leave more to be desired. So many bosses would use their special moves into a corner where no one ever was. Overall the boss tactics seemed poorly planned or random at best.

3) Crafting isn't fun or rewarding. Using mix and match doesn't get the item added to the list even when taking from the wizard book. The possibility of finding mixes correctly by playing around with random store brought items is impossible because everything uses a rare or semi rare item.

4) It does little to make the grind fun. Fights take up too much time. Drop rates are all over the place. Creature capture process can be downright hair pulling at times.

5) MP uses on spells are all over the place when it comes to the familiers. Some moves are over priced for what they offer. Would be nice to get a little more MP in terms of the amount that can be lost in a single battle or a few minutes of a boss fight.

6) Leaves little thought to the player. This person needs to get this heart. Oh, let me open my spell book and use it. No, can't do that. Need in-game prompt first. Why even give me the choice to use certain things if I'm never allowed to actually use them without the prompt opening it for me?

7) Hook shoot chest involves running around randomly until you get lucky enough to find that one spot where your prompted to use the hook shot. No options to ever try to shoot it on your own.

8) No option to make it faster to recast spells of the same type. Each time I had to open the spell list and find that same spell again.

9) Monster and player move animation is unskippable no matter how many times I've seen it.

10) This is more of wish. I have spells in my spell book I could never use. Why tease us with this? They seemed like fun to play with.

All the above doesn't hold the game back much. The main selling point is the story. The quest are a little boring with only a few chains that for the most part are very guessable. I did enjoy the game and would recommend it for at least one play through. It does have a lot of depth and a lot to do after beating it if you are the 100 completion type. I'd give it a 8/10.

Pretty much sums up the game for me too. I don't know if I'd ever play the game again since there is so much crap you can't skip and drags the game out a lot. I don't need Drippy to tell me what spell to use every time when it is completely obvious what I need to use. I originally thought it would just be the beginning of the game, but at 45 hours he was still going.

Thanks for the tip. So I ended up buying 50 Cold Coffee at DDD and just fought the next 3 boss. That was rough.

After beating the game, I see three major problems that really bothered me. The combat doesn't pause while you're selecting an action using the D-pad. It causes you to take damage during action selection. You can get around this by using your right hand to select stuff on the D-pad while dodging enemy attacks with your left thumb, I eventually got used to this. Second issue is the grinding required to get through the main story. I was playing this blind but I had to grind 2-3 hours on the overworld to advance the story after each major boss battle. So I really suggest googling "how to grind toko in Ni No Kuni", it'll cut the grinding time in half, it makes the game much more enjoyable. The last complain is not allow player to resupply after the Shadar fight. For most of the game, they designed the save points in the dungeons very well, and after each boss fight you can go to your town of choice to resupply, but after the Shadar fight near the end, you aren't given a chance to resupply anywhere else but Ding Dong Dell (your starting city with crap supplies), unless you know to spend all you money ahead of time, the next 3 boss fights will be very difficult.

Now that might makes the game sound like it's bad, but it's really not. If you take these archaic design choices in mind when playing, and avoid these pitfalls, this game could easily be 8.5 or higher for you. But for me I would rate the experience 7.5.

I was under leveled for all of the game. I really didn't see the point of gaining them. I didn't read a guide either nor did I ever have to apply much skill to take down the bosses. I'd argue that some mobs gave me more trouble than their end game bosses which turned into snore fest as we slowly chipped away at the bosses hp.
