I've also heard that some of the issues relating to system stability was actually due to a lot of RAM sticks being faulty around then.
It wasn't system stability only, that OS was a legit HD killer. One of my buddies in school was a huge computer geek and he inherited a Gateway with ME installed, messed around with it a bit, and decided he liked NT better. So, right in front of me, he formats his HD and tries to install NT, which reported the HD as non-functional. He tries again and no dice. So he breaks out the ME disk and tries to re-install ME thinking there was some funky embedded DRM. That HD was deader than a skunk on the side of the road. He ended up snapping the ME disk in half and installing a backup HD so he could have a functional desktop.
