Shouldn't overheat unless you put a ton of voltage through it...

@OP , it depends on application and how much you pay for the card (not the MSRP)

If you need CUDA/PhsyX then probably the GTX 660Ti or GTX 670 ... the GTX 660 Ti, GTX 670, GTX 680 all share the same silicon but the GTX 660 Ti has its memory bus chopped to 192bit. The GTX 660 is a whole different silicon (GK106 like the GTX 650Ti instead of GK104).

The GTX 660 Ti sits around $300 so it isn't a good value if you don't need CUDA. The GTX 670 costs ~$350 so you're paying a premium over the HD 7950 for CUDA + better stock performance.

Wouldn't pay more than $230 for the GTX 660 Ti or $320ish for the GTX 670...but that's me (retailers seem to agree since EVGA , ZOTAC, PNY, Gigabyte, GMSI, alaxy have chopped 2GB versions to 350-360ish at least for reference coolers). The GTX 680 received a price cut.

On the AMD side, probably HD 7850 or HD 7950. The HD 7870 XT has less memory bus than the HD 7950 and it's price hasn't gone down because it is new. For the $260 you drop on a HD 7870 XT you could almost get a HD 7950 ; the dropping HD 7950 prices make it almost a bad deal. I think Sapphire had HD 7950 for $260 earlier this month, with 3 free games and XFX DD for $280 after $30 rebate. There's also a Powercolor on Newegg with single fan for $275, but it's a single blower type,

The HD 7850 is around $150 for 1GB so if you find a 7850 2GB for $160-170 you're golden as they normally run $200 MSRP. The HD 7870 runs $200 after rebates typically; HD 7950 typically $280 after rebates.
