CPU Usage with 807x WUs

Thread Starter
So for the past 3-4 days I've been getting nothing but 807x WUs when I've had 762x WUs for weeks and weeks. Not only is that a drop in PPD but I take a PPD hit from my 3770k running Linux/VM SMP8. The GPU core takes more CPU usage with 807x but it makes the vmware usage all erratic. The picture is CPU usage with the GPU 8074 WU and the VM going at once and then me pausing the GPU WU. The usage of the CPU jumps up and is much more stable. Nearly 100% all the time. I go from 25k PPD to 33k PPD which is where the VM was running with 762x WUs.

Has anyone else experienced this at all? Is there a way to measure PCI-E bandwidth usage? No process is registering as using those extra cycles but something from the GPU is and my first guess would be the PCI-E bus. I'd like to compare these different WU types if I ever get a 762x WU again. The GPU is powering my display.

I'm not aware of any tool that will measure PCI-e throughput in real time (or any time for that matter tongue.gif). Only suggestion I have for you is to try raising the priority of the vm process in task manager and see if you can find a balance where you CPU usage is good but your GPU is still being fed.

I think that's about the best I've got I'm afraid. Not that I expect it to help here, but when you get a chance you should add your system info to your signature using rigbuilder.

Yeah I should do the rigbuilder thing...I've been here long enough.

Same results with an a3 7516 as earlier with an a4 8028. Both the VM and GPU core have idle priority according to Task Manager.

When I was using VMware the default process priority was normal, so try bumping it up from idle to normal and see how that does for you. I'm not surprised that your seeing the same results with a different CPU WU, I'd imagine the problem has to do with the extra CPU time required by the GPU units you, me, and everybody else seems stuck on.

I had followed WonderMutt's video and changed the VM priority to idle. I changed it to Normal just now . Overall CPU usage is steadier at 99-100% but core_15 is now using 2-3% all the time.

Hmm, Ya know what REALLY makes it go bonkers? I am connected to the PC with TeamViewier....so when I sit and view task manager it levels out to 99-100% as mentioned above. When I start typing a reply the CPU usage goes all over the place like in the screenshot. If I type a bit, then go back to TM and let it sit, the CPU% eventually goes back up but it does take a bit. I am going to have to test this more at home so I'm not adding TV as another variable.

We got spoiled by the large p762x and p8018(etc.) WUs over the past year or so.
The smaller GPU WUs have always interfered with CPU folding.

I don't think it is that the smaller GPU WUs use much more CPU resources than the larger WUs, just that they interrupt the CPU much more often.

But yeah, it sucks when the difference between the the "good" GPU WUs, and the "bad" ones, is 5-7k fewer PPD from the GPU AND 2-10+k fewer PPD from the CPU...rolleyes.gif

Yeah, I didn't order my 570 until right at the end of the 8057 reign so all I've ever had are the 762x WUs besides a very random 807x until now.

At home the CPU% is staying pegged at 100% with an 8028 a4 and 8073. CPU PPD was 4-5k PPD higher than I have seen it in the past few days so hopefully the increase in priority helped some. I don't think it'll make the system lag with the VM at normal priority any more than GPU folding.
