Z77 and Ivy Bridge SLI Question

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I've searched the forums and I haven't been able to find the answer to my question.

I have 2 Nvidia 680s with triple slot coolers installed and an Intel 3770k. I am trying to find a motherboard that will allow me to run SLI with a card in the first PCI-e slot and one in the last slot over the PSU. I have enough room between the bottom card and the PSU on my current motherboard for it to have room to breathe but I am unable to run SLI like this. To run SLI currently I need to have my cards right up against eachother which causes the top card to constantly fight for air and that raises the temperature quite a bit.

Does anyone know of a Z77 motherboard that would support SLI in this fashion in the range of $150 to $250? I am looking to get as much room between the cards as I can.

I have provided the following pictures to help illustrate my question. The top is how I have to run it now, the bottom is how I would like to run SLI.

G1 Sniper 3, slots 1 and 3 are recommended to use. Other may work too, but I am not sure.

Usually people who are running that kind of hardware watercool them... you'd need a big motherboard for air cooling efficiently.

Would that be the first and third green slots, or is that counting the PCI-e 1x slot as number 2 which would make it the first and second green slots?

Yeah, I have thought about watercooling but I haven't wanted to spend the money and time on it yet.

First and third green slots. In the manual PCI-E #1 is the first, and PCI-E #2 is the third. You can download it and check it yourself.

SLI needs at least X8 per slot to work. This board has X8 on all slots, so it should work even with the first and the last, but I am not sure.

Just a quick note, I went ahead and purchased the Gigabyte G1 Sniper 3 as it does exactly what I want, thank you for that.

The Sniper3 runs in 16x/0x/16x/0x which is perfect.

yea sniper 3 will run any two slots at the same time.
