GTX 680 SLI PCIE running at x8 and x2

Thread Starter
Hi Guys,

Yesterday I bought a second GTX 680 to run in SLI.

Now the problem I have is the PCIE bus speeds are showing as too slow in GPU-Z. Card one seems to be running correctly at 8x PCI 3.0 but card two is running at 2x PCI 3.0.

I have tried running the GPU-Z render test to see if they will throttle up but they don't get any faster.

Specs are as per sig rig:

CPU: 3770k
Motherboard: Asrock Fatal1ty Z68 Pro Gen3
GPU 1: Asus GTX 680 reference
GPU 2: Gigabyte GTX 680 OC

The motherboard manual says to install the GPU's in PCIE slots 2 (16x) and 4 (16x) which I have done. As far as I know this should result in each card running at 8x bandwidth.

Any suggestions would be appreciated as its driving me nuts!

First card might need to be in the 1st red slot then the second card should be in the 2nd red slot.
Is that where you have them?

Hi mate thanks for the response, yep that's how I've got them. PCIE Slots 2 (first red one) and 4 (second red one) on the motherboard are the 16x ones, which the GPUs are plugged into.

I'll just add that I have tried two different SLI bridges which make no difference. This is really starting to bug me, is the motherboard faulty?

Edit, just noticed these are two different brands which answered my original question about the different clock speeds and fillrates...

have you tried to swap the cards between the two pci-e socket to see if the card @ 2x is also showing @ 2x in the other socket?

Thanks for the suggestion, I haven't been able to swap the cards over because the top card is part of the water cooling loop and doesn't stretch down that far (bottom card is air cooled)

I could empty the loop and swap them over if you think its worth trying? What are you thinking the issue could be?

The top card is an Asus 2gb reference board with a water block - default clock is 1006mhz

The bottom card is an air cooled Gigabyte 2gb OC edition (basically a reference board with an 8 pin power plug AFAIK) - default clock is 1072mhz
