I could empty the loop and swap them over if you think its worth trying? What are you thinking the issue could be?

The top card is an Asus 2gb reference board with a water block - default clock is 1006mhz

The bottom card is an air cooled Gigabyte 2gb OC edition (basically a reference board with an 8 pin power plug AFAIK) - default clock is 1072mhz

yeah it's a mission but could help identify if it's a motherboard or gpu issue.... if the card is moved and the bus speed follows it it's suggesting the gpu, but if it doesn't then it's likely to be motherboard related.

Do you have access to another pc you can try the new card in to check the speed on.. will save the hassle of breaking your loop.

Go into your motherboard bios as you boot up...Check under an option for how the PCI E lanes handle the cards....I know for my board theres and option to have them run at different X16 x8 configurations...really search your motherboard bios area for configurations..thinking.gif

even if the motherboard manuel booklit says which lanes to put the 2 cards in to run at x16, you might still have to go into the bios and manuelly set it at the right configuration..

OK that makes sense and is worth a try thanks.

There is enough give in the loop that I can fit the bottom card into the top slot without pulling the loop to bits but it won't be SLI - just a single card.

Will this still tell us what we need to know?

yes, if you move the new card which is reporting x2 to the slot that is currently reporting x8 then in theory if everything is ok it should show x16 which is the default for single gfx card.

if it's anything lower then there is likely a gfx card issue or possibly power supply.

if it's all ok then it is suggesting a possible issue with the pcie4 slot... are there any bios updates available for you system?

I've been right through the BIOS but there is no options relating to the PCI E lanes

I'll try Ardalista's suggestion of putting the bottom card in the top slot and checking what the lane speed is.

Thanks for all the help guys, I'll report back in 5.

Looks correct, yours is a 4 rail PSU (my wife has one) and each rail is vertical horizontal so one card per red pair.

OK I removed the top card and replaced it with the bottom card. Result is 8x at PCI 3.0 frown.gif

So it's only running at half the lanes in the top slot. Just to clarify, I don't have any sound cards or other devices plugged into any of the other slots.

What do you reckon Ardalista?

Correct on the 4 rails but they are horizontal according to this info

http://www.ocztechnology.com/res/manuals/OCZ750FTY.pdf

each rail is rated to 18amps.. so would need to know what else he has sharing the rails with the gfx cards, can't tell from the pic if anything is plugged in.

so currently each gfx card is split between rail #3 & #4 rather than being on their own rails.
