[Games.On.Net] EA recants on company-wide ban for unreported SimCity bugs, changes EULA - Page 4

Their casual approach to banning is the customer service people are referring to as horrible. Not a game not showing up on your Origin library after purchase or something like that.

EA has given no foundation for any one to defend them on the issue of banning. Did those people ever get their Origin accounts back for having bad language in their BF3 forum posts for example? Did the FiFA mistake bans ever get completely resolved? They are stating they meant the Sim City EULA to mean that users will be banned for abuse, but have they said what constitutes abuse? Using an exploit twice might be enough with the way they handle the bans and if I was to report something I would want to recreate it a few times to make sure it wasn't a temporary glitch. Plus seeing as how Sim City supposedly has a single player mode...there should be nothing a person can do to get banned from that and certainly not from your whole Origin account.

Who got banned for failing to report a bug? My guess is no one... hence they changed the EULA when they realised it wasn't correct. About the others, I never heard about them so I have no idea...

I mean, they could write a EULA saying that anyone using C4 in BF3 would result in their first born being killed and then themselves being hung, drawn and quartered. Just because it's there doesn't mean it was done. I think people just assume the worst when mistakes are made.

Thats like saying..."Our programmers aren't perfect and they make mistakes in their code....Because they make mistakes we are going to take it out on the user and not the programmer"

Sometimes its hard for an individual to be able to tell what is suppose to be apart of the game and what is not.

I work as a software analyst, so I liaise between engineers and our multinational business partners. When people have a pigeon holed job such as an engineer or a legal advisor... they often have nooooooo idea about what else goes on. To them their job is what's important and that's all. I could write an engineering brief that says 'Make sure the software crashes when a user presses submit'... and chances are it'd be built. If it's in the spec it gets built... that's final.

I reckon the same applies here. Where you have a massive company with so many disparate departments, they don't tend to know each others job... so they get briefed to do something and then don't really consider the knock on effect. I bet some team got briefed to write a EULA and didn't consider the actual outcome.

It really isn't rare, it happens in any company that gets big. That's why business at schools/universities drills into potential managers the important of documentation and communication...

I am just saying that their customer service is fine until you get to the issue of banning. Obviously when they first drafted and reviewed the EULA the people at EA saw nothing wrong with what was in there. There have been thousands of reported bans for very frivolous things (I am not sure how you missed all the bans for swearing on the BF3 forums...that was quite the scandal). Things not even mentioned in a EULA or ToS some times. When I say ban I am talking about bans to entire origin accounts and not the one game in which the the infraction happened. They are very swing happy with the ban hammer and it is starting to come back on them. From the sound of things, once you are banned there is no arguing it even with evidence to back you. Though this is the same for any online distribution (like Steam, but at least they keep the ban hammer in check).

It is this reason why I purchase each game on Origin on a different account. Then if I get banned for any reason, no matter if I deserve it or not, I will not lose the other games.

I hadn't seen anything about that and given my post count, i've been around quite a bit. (not to say it didn't happen... just it can't of been that widespread.)

This reminds me of what the Guild Wars 2 team did on launch for people who abused some bug with weapons. These gaming companies have gotten ruthlessly greedy.

Then you have missed the several threads on here about EA's willingness to outright ban entire origin accounts at wim. I don't think I have ever heard a single story of an Origin account having only one game banned. There was even one a while back about a large number of Oirign accounts being banned for bad mouthing games or the company on their forums. I am sorry this case is about a BETA test for a game with a single player mode. Person isn't reporting bugs then remove them from the beta, there is no excuse to ban their ENTIRE account. The big question, given some of the shady things they have done in the past, is what constitutes abusing a bug? Like Vagrant said, when I find a bug I make damn sure that it is repeatable and really a bug/glitch before reporting it because many times it is just a freak accurance.
