Good speaker/sound card combo for watching movies?

Thread Starter
I will be building my first PC soon with its main function being a HTPC for watching movies/ TV shows and general computing.
My question is what would be a good speaker/ soundcard setup? I had been thinking of buying an ASUS Xonar DX so that I don't have to put up with onboard sound and then getting a set of Corsair SP2500s but I want to see what everyone has to say here. Here are the main points:

> I don't really want to be spending more than $350 AUD but I will if it is worth it
> As I said this system will mostly be used for watching movies/ shows
> I want bass that is enough for watching action/ sci fi movies and also decent speakers that will handle any movies
> I will be using this setup in a relatively small room
SITES
> My primary retailer that I will use is: http://umart.com.au/ and also this site if need be: http://www.computeralliance.com.au
> I can also order parts from this site but it will have to be shipped: http://www.pccasegear.com/

Thanks in advance for any help.

You have two options.

The Swan M50s are 320 off of PC case gear and you can couple that with and Asus xonar DGX sound card. That is a good quality yet fairly basic audio setup. And please don't misunderstand me, it truly would be a great setup, but I prefer something that I can grow into. For instance you could also get the audio engine P4s for 270. Then later on down the road get the sub woofer, then later on down the road get a speaker and then later on down the road get a USB dac....etc.

If you are dead sure that all your want in terms of audio is something decent, and that you aren't an unrealized audiophile, then get the swans. Just realize that these types of expensive speakers are sort of a gateway to wanting better and better audio gear. I would hate to see you spend 350 and then later on down the road sell them and spend another 400 when you could have just steadily upgraded.

Thanks for your help. I have been thinking about what to go for and realise that I probably wouldn't use speakers so much as I am so used to using earphones (I have been using Sennheiser CX270s for just about everything). Would you recommend anything from the listed retailers in the way of headphones? I was thinking about maybe buying AKG Q701s with an ASUS Xonar DX (I know it is over budget but I am willing to stretch if it is worth it).

701s have no bass and would be pretty disappointing to watch movies with.

has good info but it is so outdated.
the prices are so far off from most of the products.
There has also been many new products that could be on the list.
I say it is a good starting point, but once you start researching for yourself, you will see.

-dimwit-

I am in the process of picking up some speakers/monitors for my system, so I have been doing a lot of research.

Don't trust what people have to say until you have tried them yourself.

It is true that they are bass light, but there is bass. Plus it is more natural sounding than what a lot people consider to be "good bass".

Plus, a lot of people who say that are people who really don't have proper hardware to drive the Q701s anyways. For instance, if you listen to them through a tube amp, the bass is far more present.

However, what I will say is that they are not worth 350 bucks no matter what country you are in.

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=17251 This headphone is fairly similar to the Q701s. They are a tiny bit more tinny, but if you equalize them, I don't think you would notice a difference in sound quality, and you would save quite a bit of money.

Later on down the road, I would couple it witht he audio engine D1 dac and amp combo. thumb.gif

I think I'll wait a few more pay checks and go with the Audio-Technica ATH-AD900 (or the Sennheiser HD598?) and an Audioengine DAC. I just hope they have some bass as I purchased an ASUS Vulcan (which I only use when on skype now) and I was disappointed at the bass and sound quality. That said, I was using on board sound.

AD900 are also very light on bass and tend to be better for instrumental music and gaming. HD598 might work, but still lighter on bass than most other options. Nothing wrong with that, but for watching movies I still think they would be disappointing.

I disagree that the OCN guide is out of date. What else would you add to it?

For OP, Beyernamic DT880 would be a budget stretch, DT770 250ohm $170, Denon D2000 if you can get them used at a good price ~$225-250, Audio Technica A700 (not the AD700) $150

I will do what i can.
I am just saying that when i was researching, the prices were sometimes 25%-70% more.
I am not saying the info is bad (info is very good), but it is frustrating when you are looking for some-KRK Rokit Powered 5 and the thread says they are $120ish and the are really $150 EACH!!!! And the
Swans M10-are they even made anymore?

If the tread is OCN's Most Recommended Audio Products dont you think there should be some sort of updates?

Dont put prices, put High/Mid/Low end and a price range $100-$200, so if that is the persons range, they can do research themselves.

When i was buying my headphones and sound card (and soon to be speakers) i was always getting links to the thread.
If the tread is going to be part of OCN, dont you think we should be giving people better information?

-dimwit-

I wish I had the money buy and the time to research Audio products, but i am a working stiff. (and the wife needs a new car.
