I disagree that the OCN guide is out of date. What else would you add to it?

For OP, Beyernamic DT880 would be a budget stretch, DT770 250ohm $170, Denon D2000 if you can get them used at a good price ~$225-250, Audio Technica A700 (not the AD700) $150

You are completely aware that you are talking about american prices, and other than the DT880s you are also talking about closed headphones.....right?

I'm not about to look everything up on aussie stores myself, he can do that. So what if they are closed? Sound stage is slightly smaller, big deal. He wants bass response for action and sci-fi.

It might just be worth purchasing from the US and paying for the shipping since there isn't much choice in Australia and the prices are that much higher anyway. Where abouts in the US do you guys get your audio products? The closer to the West Coast the better as shipping will be cheaper.

Would you recommend the Beyerdynamic DT 990 Premium 600 ohm with a Fiio E9 amplifier?

I haven't heard the 990, but I think they are supposed to have more of a V shaped frequency response, with strong bass and sparkling highs. They would certainly be a great choice for you. DT880 are more neutral and accurate. The 600 ohm versions might need a better amp than the E9 to sound their best. but I'm not sure.

What amp should I look into to drive the DT 990 600 ohm? I am thinking about the Audioengine D1 or the Fiio e9 and e7 combo.

On another note, I just looked into Amazon's international shipping policies and they only ship small things like DVDs etc. so I will have to either deal with Australia's high prices or find another retailer that will ship to Australia.

I have found this store but they are well overpriced even by Australian standards.

Audioengine D1, Schiit Modi, or iBasso D7 would be my suggestions for DAC, and Schiit Magni or JDS Lab's O2 for an amp. I tend to stay away from Fiio because I don't really consider it an audiophile brand. It's like the Apple of the audio companies, making shiny things with LED screens.

Look for a courier service that will buy and ship things for you for a fee. I've done this with some things from Japan before.

I can only find the DT 990 250 ohm in Australia ($300) and the retailer is in the same city as myself so shipping will be next to nothing. On top of that I will probably go with the Audioengine D1 for $169.

Beyerdynamic DT 990 250 Ohm:

That combo would work fine, the D1 can drive the 250 ohm version
