Yea, on low even with SMAA it's locked at 60fps without a hiccup (I'd hope a 7970 was capable of 60 locked on low)

What I didn't say is that it averages 85 FPS and only rarely goes sub 60 and very rarely goes into the 30s. But that's not my problem, that's Crytek's problem for doing a shoddy optimization job.

Don't forget the idle game called "Reset". The Praxis engine is looking really impressive. Look at the video about Reset atmosphere.

Low on the left, high on the right:

FPS

Frametimes (lower is better)

Way too much sub 60 and 30 going on. Much more than the in game counter led me to believe, but that makes sense since it is an average and doesn't really tell the full tale.

Best AA for visuals or best AA for performance? My frames get hit pretty bad with anything other than FXAA or SMAA turned on.

THIS IS SO CONFUSING, I wish there was an article that explained what on earth all these anti-aliasing methods mean.

E.g. IIn my nVidia control panel I have FXAA turned "Off", but in the game settings you can turn it "On". So is it on or off?? Because usually there is an option for "Let the 3D application decide" but there is no such option for FXAA in nVidia settings, only On/Off.

FXAA is Fast Approximate Anti-Aliasing. It analyzes the frame rather than the geometry and smooths the edges. In many cases, FXAA can be applied at a cost of 1ms per frame or less, resulting in frame rates that are often 2x higher than 4xMSAA with comparable image quality.

SMAA 1x is Subpixel Morphological Anti-Aliasing. It basically operates the same as FXAA but uses different equations to figure out what to blend and how to blend them. For the higher levels of SMAA check out the 2nd white paper below. The 1x version will have roughly the same cost as FXAA, which is to say hardly any at all.

TXAA is Temporal Anti-Aliasing. It is basically FXAA but it keeps data from multiple frames. TXAA 1 offers visual quality on par with 8xMSAA with the performance hit of 2xMSAA, while TXAA 2 offers image quality that is superior to 8xMSAA, but with performance comparable to 4xMSAA.

If FXAA is set to on in the game it is using it at the game integrated level which has been custom tuned by the developer. If it is forced through the Nvidia control panel it uses defaults which may not look as good as the developer tuned in game version.

Was getting 20fps before. Not playable. Then put in the quad and was getting 30fps on high at 1080p no AA. Now everything is very playable with the new amd beta driver smile.gif

It looks good but I'm just not a fan of ubisoft anymore since the 2nd assassins creed game everything since then has been kinda meh too me. Fry cry 3 really nailed it though so perhaps there is more good things to come from ubi and I also haven't played AC3 yet so idk what to expect from then anymore.
