550ti to 7870?

Thread Starter
Hi,

I've been looking at upgrading to the 7870 specifically:

http://www.dabs.com/products/best-value-vtx3d-amd-radeon-7870-1100-mhz-2gb-pci-express-hdmi-x-edition-88PX.html?q=7870&src=16#

is this a good upgrade or should i wait until new cards etc?

This is the top of my budget if i was going to upgrade
I am looking at playing games like far cry 3, battlefield3, crysis. At the moment i get 28fps max on far cry 3 at dx9 very high settings. I would like to play in ultra dx11.
Thanks

The 7870 and Tahiti LE cards are pretty good bang for the buck. I wouldn't wait for new cards if you aren't looking for a top of the line card.

The Club3d joker card has been getting great reviews.

The 550Ti is last generation, so you may have meant the 650Ti. I would tell you to get the same thing anyway, go Tahiti LE if you can.

That's pretty much the worst 7870 you could buy, I know you're at the top of your budget but spend the extra £15 to get this:

Not a bad upgrade, I'd say go for it if you can afford it, it's one of the best valued video cards for the money if you ask me.

My current card is definitely the 550ti

And is the Sapphire version a good card, i can probably stretch to that as i was also looking at the XFX:

Avoid XFX cards, they have noisy coolers that don't perform well. Stick with Sapphire, MSI or Gigabyte.

Ah, upgrading from the 550ti. For some reason I thought you meant upgrading to that or the 7870. A good upgrade in that case.

Sapphire has always been good to me, as has XFX. I have never had any trouble with their coolers. I have had a sapphire 6950, and worked extensively on a system with an XFX 7850. I would say the 7850 was quieter than my Sapphire. If you can get a good deal on an XFX card, go with it. There's nothing between them and sapphire in my book.
