Fan Controller with Fan Splitters for WC Setup, Will it Work?

Thread Starter
I’m planning a pretty large water cooled build in the Corsair 900D case when it comes out, but I’m wanting to be able to control most/all of the fans in the case, so I’m working up ideas on how I can do this with minimal fan controllers, as I want to have as few 5.25 bays used as possible.

So what I want to know is, will my current idea (below) work? I’ve got some of the parts already (from a current build that will be migrating to this case), but I wanted to get other people’s input before I put a bunch of money into it just to find out it won’t work as I expect, so…

The idea that I had was to get a good, high wattage fan controller and some fan splitters and connect 1 splitter to each channel on the controller. So here's what I'm planning on doing (and if for any reason this wouldn't work, someone let me know)...

1x Lamptron 50W 4 channel fan controller

4x 3 pin in to 5x 3 pin fan splitter

8x 2 Packs of Corsair SP120 High Performance Fans (so 16 fans total)

With this I figure I can have 16 fans (4 per channel) all controlled. Since I’m not a huge fan of push/pull setups (I prefer just using pull since there is not a huge performance difference and it is a LOT easier to clean), I figure this will be able to run all the fans on 480mm rad (top), 360mm rad (bottom), 2 240 rads (bottom and front) and 4 or 5 case fans.

If I mount these splitters behind the MB I should be able to hide the wires pretty well and make it look all pretty and then I’ll be able to control just about all the fans I’ll have in the system.

That was my plan, let me know if you guys think it would work. The way I’m looking at it, 4 fans per splitter would be 48 watts per channel and the controller is rated up to 50, so I should be fine, but I don’t know if there is something I’m missing that would make this not work.

Let me know what you guys think. Thanks!

Why not a bigger fan controller? This would be able to handle
The fans are about 2.25w. max on a single molex is 132 watts. thats about 35 watts.
Amp wise molexes handle 11 amps those don't even come close
I would wire the ones you were gonna link in parallel to make sure they all get the power they deserve

The SP120's pull 0.18A at 12VDC, which is 2.16 Watts per fan.

http://www.crownaudio.com/ohms-law.htm

16 fans at 2.16 Watts per fan is 34.56 Watts total.

If that controller can handle 50 Watts per channel, you should be well under the Watts per channel, even with 16 fans on 1 channel.

[Edit]

If you wanted, you could control 23 SP120 fans on a single channel ... or 92 SP120 fans on that 1 controller ... if you really wanted to. biggrin.gif

That kaze controller is junk. Stick with the Lamptron . In fact you dont even need that big a controller. .
Those fans you linked are rated at 0.18 amp so that's only 2.16 watts (12v x 0.18a = 2.16w). You could put 23 of these on a single 50w channel.

Edit: i've tried pretty much every fan controllers you can think of outside the very expensive Aquaero. You are making a great choice with a Lamptron. Great controllers.

What can happen if you split wires and the controller can't handle the watts/amps is that the fans will just run at a reduced speed. I had this happen to me on a push pull rad and I actually got a better performance when I took the three split fans off and my remaining three ran at a higher speed. After a while I just got rid of the controller and plug the fans directly into the molex connecter. The fans at full speed are still quieter than the pump.

i have the same issue as you really

need a fan controller for the 16 fans, possibly 20 in the 900D build i'm doing.

let me know what you come up with smile.gif

My next build will have 34 fans (and counting). I will control them all with a Lamptron Touch controller. It has 30w per channel, and that's plenty for me. I wont even come close to maxing out the Touch's 6 channels.
Just stay away from those heat producing undervolting controllers.

Sounds like a mountain mods build biggrin.gif

I use a NZXT Sentry LXE atm, and its great, but nowhere near enough power for multiple fans.

If i can find a 4 chan controller that will handle 8 fans each, i will be happy smile.gif
