Pulling my hair out about subwoofer ONLY equalization

Thread Starter
I have motherboard audio via a Biostart TZ68k+ mobo, great board btw. It is the usual Realtek ALC892 hardware with default basically unedited for biostar software. In the main software of course is a hardware EQ so i'm able to set output equalization of all channels at once. I want to however set equalization of JUST the sub woofer channel. I usually accomplish this by using AC3 filter for all of my movies, etc. This works fantastic, i have separate EQ's and TA for all channels.

The problem I run into is AC3filter will not output mp3's as 5.1 channel audio. So then when i listen to music it is sent to my reciever as 2 channel and it creates the subwoofer output on it's own. Which normally would be fine but I enjoy my main speakers with a dip at about 60hz and my subwoofer with a slight boost around 30hz and dip around 75 and then a sharp crossover at 90hz.

I know there is some audiophile out there that has to have figured out how to output sound in full appropriate 2.1/5.1 if you simulate the rears and center based on the stereo track (ac3 encoded, dts encoded, whatever) with separate EQ control for each channel right?

Let me be clear that making a matix of everything and expanding a 2 channel track to 5.1 channels isn't a problem with movies. But with mp3 audio it will not do it with AC3 filter and for the life of me I can't figure out why. And also, the expansion of the left and right tracks to the rears and center isn't important as long as there is a separate subwoofer track I can EQ, so it will all have to be wrapped into a surround sound track and pushed through spdif to my receiver.

Someone help.

I am trying to be as clear as I can. Although my mind is super foggy today. Please ask questions if you know a lot about AC3 Filter, I can provide you with screen shots of my ac3filter setup if that helps, anything you need just ask it from me, i just need to get this taken care of. I have this huge custom built audio system and the sub really needs some EQ'ing for music. But I don't want to EQ the signal that goes to my mains.

Why don't you just wire up your sub to your receiver? Or do you?

Yeah sub is wired up to the receiver but unless the mp3 is sent through as a multichannel audio format to the receiver, the receiver just pulls the subwoofer output from the left and right channels. which means whatever I eq the front channels with effects the subwoofer output.

Alright, you amp should push the sound to the sub in all materiel. Are you sure that you don't have it set to do only the lfe channel?

Are you using hardware EQ or software EQ? Something like electri-Q would work be equalizing specific frequencies. Obviously you would focus on the bass be looking at the lower frequencies.

In JRiver Media Center you can:

Set output channels to 5.1 with JRSS (v2) upmixing if source is stereo (and output as DolbyDigital for SPDIF).
Set the sub crossover (20Hz to 300Hz) JRSS uses if the source doesn't contain a sub channel.
Set any number of separate parametric equalizers (frequency, bandwidth and gain) on any individual channel (including sub channel).

I think that covers everything you want, it's not free, there is a trial though.

Jriver I have never heard of, this sounds exactly like what I need. It is exactly what I do with ac3filter and if it works with MP3s I will be ecstatic. I will let you know in a few.

You might be able to do it for free if you use a player that can chain other plugins before AC3 Filter, I can't see why you can't upmix to 5.1 before AC3 Filter and then it should work as it does already. If it's just for mp3's I'd maybe look at Foobar there's quite a few upmix plugins that that could host.
