Amd 965 3.8Ghz+7950 major fps drops, upgrade to 8350 worth it? [SOLVED]

Thread Starter
Hi!

As the topic states, will upgrading my rig to a 8350 cure my issues? Right now it's really annoying everytime my fps drops from 80 down to 45ish..sometimes 38 depending on how much action is going on the map. I'm running bf3 on all high settings, it doesn't matter what map I play on, the fps drops are always the same, they drop around 20fps depending on how much stuff that's being processed.

Example with vsync on, steady 60fps down to 40-38fps
Example without vsync on, 80 fps down to 40-50

Specs:

Amd 965 x4 OC to 3.8ghz
8GB RAM
AMD 7950 3GB VRAM

Temps on CPU while gaming around <50C
GPU 60-68C

Since my mobo apparently supports am3+ I will save a few euros by NOT going intel. I was thinking about i53570k but the price difference vs my current rig is too much for my wallet.

Yet I see youtube videos and google searches where they claim to NEVER drop below 50fps using the same setup... sounds weird to me. Funny enough it's most noticeable on the close quarter maps, the game feels sluggish when the fps drops occurs.

Summarized will upgrading a 965 3.8ghz to an 8350 give me a guarantee to never go down to 38-40 fps?

Thank You

For sure your cpu handles you back on bf3 mp. If you want to save some money get a 8320 or a 6300.

Well, I play BF3 maxed out+FXAA injector, and pretty much never drop below 55 (fps cap 60, stays there like 97% of a time) so it seems like an obvious cpu-bottleneck to me, FX8350 should/will give you a big boost in BF3, you should be able to play on ultra+4xMSAA with no problems.

You should see a bump in gaming performance with an 8350. Go with the cheaper 8320 and save some bucks thumb.gif

While gaming, check task Manager for the loads. If CPU is 100% and GPU is under 90% then you have a CPU bottleneck and you will need to upgrade.

Not necessarily, games are not coded to use 100% of a CPU, I´ve never seen my 2500k go above ~88% usage in BF3 on 64p servers, yet it sometimes (rarely) is actually holding me back.

IMO a better indicator whether you have a cpu-bottleneck or not, is to watch GPU-usage and/or compare your results with other ppl with similar configs (or in this case, same configs with different CPUs).

Yes i shouldnt have included the 100% bit. If your GPU usage is under 90 then you may have a bottleneck

What motherboard are you using? As someone who has used Bulldozer on a Asus Crosshair IV Extreme and Crosshair Formula IV, there is a huge difference between "this CPU is supported" and "this Motherboard is designed for"

The AM3 Socket only supports 110A to the CPU (Full Load 8 Core Piledriver uses between 90-104A at stock)
AM3+ Supports up to 145A

I would not recommend using an 8 Core AMD FX cpu on an AM3 Board, is basically what I'm saying.
