Amd 965 3.8Ghz+7950 major fps drops, upgrade to 8350 worth it? [SOLVED] - Page 2

Battlefield is a CPU bottleneck, i own 965 920 8120 and the 8120 out performs 965. for people who keep saying the Quad core phenoms are better than the FX series there wrong.
With AAP and C&Q off even the 8120 will outperform 965 by 15-20%. I have only seen my phenoms score higher with AAP and CQ on fx series. Just make sure you install the Patches from microsoft if you get 8 core fx series

Thanks, i'm glad theres a solution instead of paying even more money for a complete overhaul.

Hmm a 6300 is 77 usd cheaper then a 8300. There isn't a huge difference between the two?

In my country (sweden) there's barely any diff in terms of cost with 8320 vs 8350, less than 40 usd.

I just did, in bf3 mp (regardless of map/mode) CPU is like 80-100% gpu never goes above 50%

IMO a better indicator whether you have a cpu-bottleneck or not, is to watch GPU-usage and/or compare your results with other ppl with similar configs (or in this case, same configs with different CPUs).

I took Pedroc advice and yeah it seems like there's a bottleneck (see above)

The AM3 Socket only supports 110A to the CPU (Full Load 8 Core Piledriver uses between 90-104A at stock)
AM3+ Supports up to 145A

I would not recommend using an 8 Core AMD FX cpu on an AM3 Board, is basically what I'm saying.

Thanks for the heads up. But after reading this link http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/960GM-GS3%20FX/, they claim to support the actual processor. Are you saying with my current mobo (960GM-GS3 FX) the build with the 8350 would suffer in terms of performance? If that's the case then what "cheap" mobo that doesn't cost a fortune would you recomend?

If i just buy the 8350 on my current setup: 252 dollars (converted from SEK) *assuming my mobo is up for the task*
Or 172USD for the 6300, is there a huge diff?

8350 vs 6300 difference in performance?

Intel i53570k (ivy) 284USD+new mobo ~ 386 USD (too much for my budget as of right now)

Thanks again for the vital information. 15-20% is a lot of power at least on my system. I just want a somewhat stable experience, right now the constant drops from 60 (vsync) down to 40 is very noticeable.

Want to thank all of you for your advice. I'm just a novice in terms of computer hardware. Thanks again thumb.gif

EDIT: Sorry for typos (fever)

The comment above also does not address the second issue that your board will have with 8 cores: weak VRMs (technically a 125W x4 965 would not be safe or reliable to run either).

I just dropped my 7950 in my htpc with a 920 and just for you and I do get random stutters and drops close enough to make my point.

Looking at the CPU support list for your motherboard. It will support a 95W version of Piledriver. So you could buy a 125W 6 or 8 Core CPU and then reduce the clock and voltage so that it will run safely on your board

Other budget boards I would recommend that support the CPU as well as Overclocking.

I currently have the the GA-990XA-UD3 board (only runs a single PCI-e slot at 16 lanes). You'll save $10 (not sure how big that is for you), but I can vouch that it is a great board. It's an 8+2 board so it will run most/all high end AM3(+) CPU's. I am currently running an unlocked 960 x4 (to a 1605 x6) overclocked to 4.0. It's a beast of a board. I recommend Gigabyte

I want to thank all of you for your suggestions. Especially I learned just how valuable it is to pay more for a better motherboard (future proof) vs a cheap one. I was in the store looking at fx 8350 but the insane watt output scared me. Since I had the buy a new motherboard, I went with gigabyte sniper m3 and i5 3570k.

Thank you all for your help smile.gif

Here are my scores with my current setup; runs great on bf3 (finally) but 3dmark could be better?

Your scores will probley increase if you go into your bios and disable amp amd master profiles or aap and thermal control
