Any Idea why my system is running this hot?

Thread Starter
Evening overclockers. I'm having a bit of trouble with my heat and I can't seem to pin the problem.

As you can see, my setup seems to be running quite hot, and this is only while idling with a few chrome tabs and skype open.

I've sprayed out the inside with compressed air and even went as far as to put the tower on top of a cardboard box to
prevent contact with the carpet but nothing seems to be working. Any ideas?

Here is my specs
AMD Phenom II X6 1055T
EVGA GTX 460 1GB
GIGABYTE GA-MA785GT-UD3H AM3 AMD 785G HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard
2 x Patriot Signature 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
Sentey Arvina Extreme Division Tower Case
CORSAIR Professional Series HX650 650W ATX12V v2.2 / EPS12V

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Are you using for a CPU cooler, is it a stock cooler?

1. Remove the stock heatsink (probably uses a simple clip assembly)
2. Clean both the contact area of the CPU heatsink and the CPU with isopropyl alcohol and a microfiber cloth
3. use compressed air to blow any dust out of the heatsink fins
4. Apply new thermal paste to the CPU. Use a drop the size of a grain of rice
5. Reinstall the heatsink. Give time for the paste to burn in.

You need an aftermarket cooler with that overclock!

Well you are supplying nearly 1.5V to the CPU on a stock cooler. There is absolutely nothing wrong with your temperatures.

My suggestiong is to get an aftermarket CPU cooler. I, unfortunately, cannot provide a suggestion for an aftermarket cooler cuz ive been out of the hardware for a long time (just know CPUs, Motherboards, and Graphics lol). My first natural impulse says, "Get the Hyper 212 +/evo." lol. I have a 212+ running in my system, and its running really well, cooling my CPU to 30 degrees (but hey im running Intel 4ghz on like an offset voltage of i think 0.5. Dont really remember havent been in my BIOS for ages). The copper heatpipes touches the CPU directly so heat transfer is more efficient. The only difference between evo and + is the evo has a better base but cooling will only have a difference of about 1-2 degrees.

Or a Xigmatek Gaia for 20 bucks from newegg. What the hyper 212's do with ~80CFM the Gaia does with 50CFM. Gaia + aftermarket fan should be better than the 212, at least in theory, and it would be the same price. I've not bought a 212 as I've been going with the Xigmatek design ever since I got my first Xigmatek. The mounting hardware on the Gaias is also superb.

You NEED an aftermarket heatsink, there is no way around it. The overclock you are asking from the CPU is reasonable, but it will not be long for this world if you don't reciprocate by giving it a good Cooling solution (ie it WILL die faster).

I would recommend:
- Deepcool Assassin (only $39 @ Performance PCs, and you will not find anything that is as good for the price I don't think)
- Thermalright Silver Arrow/SA SB-E/SA SB-E Extreme (best air coolers IMO but $70-90)

Your chip requires a lot of voltage for a good oc (compared to newer processors), but also has a low max temp. My girlfriendhhas a 960T so I am somewhat familiar with the chips, and if there is one thing I've learned its that you need to have the best possible cooling system you can.
