Budget Gaming Rig

Thread Starter
Okay, a few facts and statements first off...

I'm not an AMD fanboy, I just have heard they are more budget minded.
I don't need the shiniest or best, I've learned to function and deal with average/less-than-average specs and play my games at low settings.
I'm not spoiled on 1080p or speed, so any upgrade will put a tickle in my boots per say.
Over the past few months I have changed, erased, and recompiled several build ideas, this is another.

This would be my first build.

To clarify things, so I don't get any re-do's or weird statements, notes are below.

CPU: Chosen as is because my current GPU is a 5450, the APU will more than exceed that, as well as exceeding my current 2.3ghz Dual Core. That will make me happy and satisfied, I don't need all the shiny fast 4.8ghz 6/8 core machine, lol.

CPU Cooler: I will overclock, and I know AMD's run a little warmer than Intels, and I've heard this is the best heatsink/cooler that isn't liquid.

Memory: Just chosen because I want something fast, for the RAM and because the onboard processor uses the ram in tandem with the on-board GPU ram.

Storage: Heard good things about these guys and WD, went with it as recommendation of fellow user. Not looking for blazing omgitsfast! but it will be better than my current 7 year old HP OEM HDD.

Case: Not budging on this. Love the case and the aesthetics of it, and I'm a constant stalker of the club here in the forum for XB owners.

Power Supply: Heard good things about these guys and PC P&C, this one was black so it won. I went with 520W to allow me headroom in the future, and modular for wiring. Other than that, I know little to nothing about picking a PSU.

Motherboard: As you see, this is absent from my parts. I know the LEAST about motherboards, but I have narrowed it down to three.

Here are my possible choices, and my features I need/want on them:

USB 3.0: On the motherboard, not the route around back BS.
PCI-E: One for video card, and possible other cards in future (another video card, highly unlikely though, sound and network card).
RAM placement: I want to be able to fit RAM and not have clearance issues with the 212 cooler.
Expansion: I want enough connection on-board to fit my current setup and allow head room for future expansions possibly.
Aesthetics: I love the Gigabyte honestly, but the other two are also good competitors.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130663

Lastly, I own a copy of Windows 8, will be using that. I have a keyboard, mouse, monitor (1680/1050), and an optical drive already.

Usage of computer: WoW, Skyrim, Sims 3, Photoshop (art), Dreamworks (editing), ProTools (audio), and regular stuff.

I plan on keeping/adding-on to/modifying this build for the next 2 to 4 years.

My question to you all is, how does this look, does anything clash, what do I need to expect, how could you do better given my budget and aim?

Please leave a response in topic and based on the criteria I have given.

I changed the PSU to a cheaper one. No need to spend a ton on that. I also put in a decently priced ASrock board. I like the black/gold look a lot and their boards are great quality for the price. I would consider upgrading to this one if you want a little more quality:

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/zhHx

Either way you should be good to go! Remember that an HD 6670 will crossfire with that APU and give a decent boost, but that nothing faster will crossfire.

Other than that, I really like your build. I can see that you did your homework smile.gif

Edit: Yes, I favor m-ATX motherboards. With modern motherboards there is not as much that needs to be added on as there was previously. You could go smaller, but that's up to you. My ASrock recommendation still stands, even if you go normal ATX.

^^ Agree with above with everything but PSU. Only place where i would spend the most coin as a decent PSU makes or brakes a good system. Great budget build. Dont get to caught up in ram speeds as it wont make much of a noticeable difference (i cant tell the diff between 1600 & 1866).

I notice no GPU i would strongly advise if your wanting to play skyrim that you get one. The onboard on the A10 is good but if your wanting to push past medium settings a decent gpu would be advised, but again your build! thumb.gif

It has been proved that fast ram help APU's. The best performer for APU's are 1600MHz, not necessarily 1866. You will get the same results with either in a normal situation, but in gaming you might find a diffrence of maybe more 3fps in some games if you get a 1600 instead

If fast RAM helps APU's how would 1600mhz ram be faster than 1866mhz? Doesn't make much sense does it?

Even though it doesnt make sense it is true, it has been proved through some testing... Something to do with the bandwidth between the ram and apu bottlenecking it minimaly when running at 1866
