[Register] Microsoft blasts PC makers: It's YOUR fault Windows 8 crash landed - Page 4

The Register?

Not even going to give them a hit. I'd rather read a news paper that I found in the garbage bin than give them one more hit.

I don't see what the big fuss is over Windows 8. Personally, I like it, but I don't think the "upgrades" to the UI warrant an upgrade over Windows 7. It is designed for a touchscreen interface, so until those become mainstream, I have no use for the extra colors and tiles.

i tired windows 8, and i must say i enjoyed not having the option for a start menu...in metro i just typed what i wanted to use and it came up...the mouse is a relic from days gone by. the finger is the new mouse...

you asked for a new type of mouse, and microsoft gave you the finger.

sure this isn't really a "news article" but the reasoning is pretty solid.

the average purchaser of windows laptops wants a budget laptop, not something $1000+, even with a touchscreen. if these touchscreen laptops were in the budget range, maybe more people would be interested.

the reason people spend so much money on smartphones instead is because they are subsidized by the cell companies (basically people get duped by the cell companies to some degree, but there are no options in the us so what can you do?)

also, cellphones function as fashion accessories for a lot of people, so they're willing to splurge more

That terrible article brings images to mind of Ballmer flipping the table and going on a rampage all the way to the breakroom until he gets his donut fix.

Wasn't there another article recently stating that Windows 8 sold just as well as Windows 7?
Windows 8 makes sense on a tablet, which I am currently on, an old hp touchsmart, when metro comes in handy when I don't use the attached keyboard and touchpad. the problem I see with it is users that want the traditional mouse and keyboard interface were left out in the cold.

Both my desktop and this lap/tablet, run server 2012 with start8, not because I don't like metro, but because it makes advanced and administrative tasks easier without memorizing the keyboard shortcuts. for the advanced or power user, windows 8 left you out in the cold because Microsoft tried to make a fool proof system everyone can use. Not everyone knows or wants to know how a computer works, so windows 8 fits them. It would have worked if they had kept some familiarity between windows 7 to windows 8.

Windows 8 was a radical redesign, and some of the design points don't really make sense. For me, and a lot of other users, the start button was the equivalent of the steering wheel in a car, it helps you navigate to where you want to go. this design has been around for as long as the GUI. similar attempts to change it have failed miserably. a parallel example of this is when Saab replaced the steering wheel with a rotating handle in the center of the dash board, it didn't catch on.

Having a tablet running Win 8, at least an optimized derivative, and a desktop with the traditional input methods lets me see both sides of the argument. A touchscreen makes windows 8 better and more cohesive, without it, it makes no sense and leaves many users out in the cold.

Windows 8 is not a software fail that will leave a bad taste in the consumers mouth like Vista and ME, but windows 8 is trying too hard to push a trend into an environment not designed for it.

Upon reading the word 'blasts' in the title, my mind wandered over to this awesome read (has some swearing, just a warning). Microsoft didn't 'blast' anything. There isn't a single quote from Microsoft in the article, only quotes from an anonymous 'insider'.
