Seriously...all you bashers, read very slowly all your comments. They have no logic and are tainted by pure bias. There are no quotes in this article, no sources, nothing. Yet you pile it on like it's factual. That's logic problem number one. Secondly, your OPINION of the OS does not equate to it's actual quality. I'm a BMW fan and I don't like Mercedes. By all means Mercedes does not SUCK and I would not say so. If you are an adult use language like an adult to clearly communicate your opinion. But to basically claim something is usless or pointless due to your personal experiencial preference is absolutely inappropriate. On the other hand a viable reaction or comment would be better expressed as what you didn't like and the reason why.
"I run Windows 8 and I would say if it hadn't been for companies that return the start menu...It would have failed harder than vista/ME combined" This would be a perfect example of what I am talking about. There is no logic here. It is blatant use of hyperbole to express an opinion based on no facts. In my opinion nothing short of a grammar school review.
"I especially hated the fact that turning off my PC became a 4 step process" Here we are again...this is actually accurate that it might take one additional step then W7 to reboot or shut down your PC, but the reality is that is literally 1sec time difference. The way this is stated it makes it sound like it takes 10 minutes to shut down
"They should look at not releasing a new OS when clearly one was not needed." Now here we have someone who claims to know that inner workings of Microsoft enough(their goals, product release schedule, future tech, integration with other MS ventures, etc) that he can say to MS that W8 "is not needed". To be technical this forum is not needed either, but I don't see him boycotting that. Anyway, I would love to know what he thinks is needed based on MS' upcoming products, future tech, device integration, etc. I'd love to see his 5, 10, 15 year plan for MS complete with each department and their unified direction. He sounds like he must know what he is talking about, so I can't wait to hear it. Even still, he has no privalege of telling MS what is needed until he buys market share enough to dictate that direction. Just don't buy it.

Other responses:
"I have no need to use a touch screen...so I will be left behind..." You don't need touch screen to run W8. In fact, I don't even find a need for touch screen for most of what I do on my desktop. Dont know why W8 touch screen capability is such a hinderace on desktop for people.

There happens to be a Windows 8 fan club on this very site. I would suggest in direct contrast to many opinions posted here for the reasons that Windows 8 sucks...it doesn't suck. So for all who say Metro sucks because you don't like it, there is someone who says they love it and so it doesn't suck. It certainly can't suck and not suck at the same time. So maybe it's not a matter of sucking. Maybe its a matter of preference. Maybe it's a metter of getting used to change, Maybe its a matter of not caring that it takes 1.5 sec longer to get to the power options, especially with all the improvements.

Sorry for the long post(ok no I'm not) but I think we should be very careful in the language we use to convey facts, when facts aren't really what we are conveying.
Thanks for listening

Edit @ b3machi7ke below

I repped specifically because of people who make posts just like the one you've made. Ironic, because it would be quite helpful to you, in my opinion.

Maybe you should read it again and learn about how opinions such as "wasn't helpful or useful" can be better stated so as to leave for the possibility that somebody else might find the opposite opinion to yourself.

Or you could just post half baked jabs or whatever.

Microsoft, no.
I simply don't understand the close-mindedness of people. Microsoft did something that needed to be done, they changed their UI, a LITTLE bit.

For a community that proclaims "in pursuit of performance", hating on an OS that is generally faster is asinine. I don't think the problem is the OS necessarily. I think it's peoples comfort zones.

I'm pretty sure this has been posted before, but I can't find it at the moment. However, I did find a response article that I put up last month.

So... this is old news.

1) There is also a Windows 8 haters club on this very site as well. One is no more important than the other. As you said, what works for one group doesn't work for the other. Yes, it is a matter of preference. It is NOT a matter of "getting used to change". I wish people would stop saying that. People know how to use it, they just don't LIKE TO. Aside from boot times, there is no benefit to running Windows 8 at this time over Windows 7. Review after review has shown that the FPS in gaming is virtually the same. The so called "more secure" argument has already been shot down now that Windows 8 has already been subject to attacks. The list goes on and on. So no, it isn't a matter of "getting used to" the OS, I've been using it as a member of MSDN for over 10 months now. I'm used to it, I just don't like Metro. Never have, NEVER WILL. Deal with it and stop saying that I have to learn how to to use my computer all over again. Our company writes software, we take input from our customers and often do what they want, we don't go around telling THEM to "shut up and learn how to use our software".

2) I take it you've never heard or (or maybe don't understand) the phrase "Perception is reality". This is especially true when trying to seperate people's money from their wallets, which is what Microsoft seems to be having very hard time doing with Windows 8.

while you make good points. I'm not really addressing those who are used to the OS and can plainly say they don't prefer it. I'm addressing those who say the OS is useless, pointless, worse than ME and Vista combined, etc. I totally understand needing to cater to the customer in order to have a surviving business. But there is also a line drawn at a point where customer opinion trends far beyond company demands. MS believes they will make big money on their market place and future structure of integrated OS/devices or this would not be the direction they are headed in. They are the first to bridge the gap between tablets and true PC OS. They want to build it into a viable market and business. I don't blame them. W8 may not be the perfect solution, nor is it their final solution. But it is a great first step. I guarantee that Apple and Google do the exact same thing with different approaches. It will be interesting to see what comes in the years ahead. The truth is that the general direction that these companies are heading is the actual future of technology. The implementation(or execution) will be the deciding factor as to who comes out on top. But for MS to not take the initiative would be sure death. They came up with a game plan, and while they were primed to be the first to market with this approach they took the opportunity. This is why those who say W8 is not needed are not logical. They are speeking from the comfortability of their own PC. Not from the future change in computing that is no doubt shortly around the corner(actual at hand).
In short MS needs W8 in order to stay viable. If they didn't release it, they likely would have been behind the curve. Is W8 the perfect solution to the task at hand...no. But it's the first and certainly not the last.

i don't have a problem with windows 8 in general. but i think the push for general x86 computing on touchscreen is asinine, since it's so imprecise and unergonomic.

why does ms think people should adopt touchscreen laptops, for example. just give us trackpads that don't suck, so we don't have to strain our arms are smudge our screens up.

w8 plus a trackpad sounds fine though.
