The value comparison that includes on the CPU/Motherboard is important to a select group of PC gamers. If I'm using DDR3 memory, a 7970, and an overall good system with a 5 year old motherboard and CPU, the AMD solution is the most cost effective upgrade to a new system. If I'm upgrading my entire setup, Intel is still more expensive, but not so much so that it wouldn't be considered.
Now, power consumption is way out of control with AMD. They need to get that under control. Everything is moving to low-power and AMD needs to keep up.
