I'm sure an i3 unlocked @ 4.0-4.5ghz would easily outperform a 8350 in lightly threaded older games. But overall, in the grand scheme of things the 8350 is the better cpu.

Unfortunately Intel didn't unlock it, because it would probably have cannibalized some i5 sales.

For pure gaming the old i3 Clarkdale when overclocked would pretty much batter any AMD CPU....

AMD want to count themselves lucky that the current Ivy/Sandy Bridge powered core i3's can't be overclocked.
I'm not sure I agree with that. I doubt an OC'd Clarkdale could keep up with an 8350 in a highly threaded game like BF3. Especially if you're talking about CF/SLI...

It wouldn't be far behind but in any other game I would go with the i3, you also have to remember they have HT.

The old Clarkdale i3's completely battered the old AMD Phenom 2 CPU's when it came to gaming.

Hmmm, I thought that was the verdict BEFORE this thread was posted?? biggrin.gif

AMD has no place in gaming with their FX series. Just my opinion. If you want a cheap WORKSTATION go AMD. If you want a cheap GAMING rig go i3.

edit: actually what the hell am I saying don't go i3. you NEVER go i3.... *sometimes its okay to go i3*

Sigh. The i3 cannot keep up with an FX-8 series overall, stop posting this crap. Again, call me when the i3 can be overclocked and handle mutlithreaded games better. There is enough misinformation on the net as it is..

Why not go for an i3? they're pretty decent in games.

Looking at 8 core FX vs hyperthreaded 4 core Intel, the hyperthreaded 2 core Intel should beat the 4 core FX.

Yeah that's the thing is that all these AMD guys on here preach about the 8 core FX like its the only viable chip. Then we Intel guys counter it with the fact that Intel dominates because games don't use that many cores. Then the argument usually goes into "well they WILL" which is complete garbage. People have been saying "well they WILL" etc etc futureproof more etc etc for years and they always lose in the end since technology grows so fast.

The fact of the matter is if you're only buying on PRICE why not go the cheapest FX option. What... is the quad core FX not considered a gaming CPU by AMD guys? Is the 8 core the only decent chip? I think AMD guys are falling into the moar corez trap.

edit: and my comment about never going i3 is from clerks 2... come on someone HAS to get that joke.

You can probably get away with an FX-6300, especially if you play anything that is not Battlefield 3.

Indeed for a purely gaming system, I'd argue that the FX-6300 looks better relative to the 3570k than the FX-8350 does.

In all but the most well threaded of games, this is probably true.

However, few people will be willing to go out and get LGA-1156 parts at this point, even if they are an excellent option where upgradability is not a concern.

Garbage? BF3 already uses more than 4 cores and actually benefits from it. Next generation consoles are based on AMDs 8 core jaguar CPU thus common sense will tell you that future games will utilize multiple cores/threads better than current games. All evidence points at a future where multiple core CPUs will have advantage over 2 or 4 core ones, and while it might not happen ( highly unlikely IMO), to swear it off as "complete garbage" is just ignorant.
