Ok I am looking at two laptop for my mom, below are the requirements and what she uses it for.

Uses: VPN to work, Watch dvd's, general typing/office/word/excel/powerpoint stuff, surf net, use video chat like skype and such.
Requirements: 14in-16in screen, Must have 10-key(not the mutilated fn key version), Quad core processor, 6gb ram, Windows 8 Pro, Office Student and Business 2010, Bluetooth, 3+ Year warranty.
Plus's: Backlit keyboard, comes in blue color
Pipe dreams: touchscreen
Price: Cheap as possible, ideally $750-$1300, falling closer to $1000 would be best.

What I am looking at right now are two toshiba's They are Toshiba Satellite L850-BT3N22

Here are the similar stats:

Windows 8 Pro
6GB DDR3 memory
500GB 5400 RPM storage
DVD Supermulti drive
1366x768 TruBrite® display
802.11b/g/n wireless with Bluetooth®
HDMI output
Integrated 1MP (720p) webcam
come in Blue
has 10-key
3 year warranty with damage coverage
office stupid and business

The two differences:

Intel® Core™ i7-3630QM Processor (6M Cache, up to 3.40 GHz) with Intel® Turbo Boost Technology and Intel 4000 Graphics total cost: $1,272.96

AMD Quad-Core A10-4600M Accelerated Processor 2.3GHz (3.2GHz with AMD Turbo Core Technology 3.0), 4MB Cache and AMD 7660 GPU cost: $1,032.46

The intel is worth $240.50 more, for what my mom is going to do with it?

I think your mom will feel a better performance boost by getting an SSD instead of getting a processor upgrade. It doesn't sound like she is doing anything that would really take advantage of the i7 and her bottleneck is the 5400rpm hard drive.

I would say both are overkill for the tasks you have described, none of them seem particular CPU or GPU intensive.

I would think an i3/i5 with an SSD (for cache) + Harddrive OR pure SSD if she can afford to live with less space would give her a much better computing experience.

But not equiped with 8 PRO($140) or Office($180) and 3 year warranty($135).

Which would make your first one: $1205 and the second one: $1145

Why even consider an i7 when she probably wont notice the difference with a pentium B980.

Well technically as long as the laptop arrived before 01-31-13, it would qualify for the $14.99 Win8 Pro upgrade.

I figured out a way to make the samsung within $16 of the cost of the Toshiba, personally I have never owned a samsung, but I have had a few toshiba's that have rocked. I sent them the info, and told them to look it over and tell me what they want, any last minute suggestions are welcome. thanks for the super fast help.

if it will be used in a lap get something like this http://www.amazon.com/Targus-Chill-AWE55US-Black-Gray/dp/B002NU5O9C/ref=sr_1_11?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1359062089&sr=1-11
far too often i see my mother with hers in her lap and its sitting on top of a blanket. might as well not even have a fan in it at that point.
