Yeah, voting with your wallet only really works on a game by game basis...unless you simply refuse to buy something from an entire publisher due to the publisher's actions. If not many people buy the second game in a series...they will know to change for the third...if there is a third. If you see or read about the changes and you like them; then you buy it.
Some times it takes a long time to clean out the bad taste in your mouth though...like I still haven't played Skyrim because of the horrible experience with Oblivion. When I see it on a Steam sale for $10 I probably will pick it up, but nothing short of that would get me to own it.
