instead of going by personal preference and everything else think of it this way.

You want the comp to last a while right? Okay then would you rather not have enough Processing power down the road? or spend just a little more and have that extra boost too keep you ahead of the crazy fast moving technology. I say try and stay ahead with the i7 3770K but that completely up to you. This is your decision and we can only guide you this is your Rig.. not ours don't let anyone force that decision, or else you'll never truly feel responsible for your build.

Enjoy the build while it only comes so often! thumb.gif

Enjoy the build and hope to see you delid either one of these great chips in the future!

Truly,
Valgaur

will you be gaming the same way 2,3,4 years from now???
Think about how your life will be changed after you finish school and you dont have that leisure time in between exams
will you not be tempted to upgrade your computer at all within those 2,3,4 years?

Ive told myself numerous times that i wont be upgrading my computer after "this build" but i get sucked up in the marketing and hype and i end up upgrading the newest and the baddest.

IMHO 3570k is more than overkill for what you are trying to do minus the folding part. plus you cannot predict what will happen in the next couple years so think of it as your side money if you really wanted to invest your money on something that time.

Since you're asking us if you should get the 3770k or the 3570k, that means you can afford the 3770k so, I would get the 3770k.

I voted for the 3770k for pretty much the above reasons stated as well. I built my rig last year when it was first released and plan on keeping it for at least 5 years, overclocked to a modest 4.5 GHz. I'm confident that my setup will last me until Intel completely fleshes out the sub 10nm architecture, besides optimizations I can't imagine actual clockspeeds going over 5 GHz typical, as die size shrinks even more.

Also if you can afford it now, that extra 100 dollars is split into 4 years, so that's about 7 cents a day!

Note: I say this because it looks like you'll get into opportunities where the i7 potential will really come into play, folding, gaming and whatnot.

Right on. After 2 years I found myself getting less and less interested in gaming. From gioing all-nighter 2-3 times a week to an hour or two a day. Ask this yourself OP. thumb.gif

2-in-1 question and the answer is to each its own. You need two rigs, one for folding and one for gaming, now the 3770K goes to folding and the other goes to gaming.

Talking some dedications here. smile.gif

Why won't you wait for haswell? With an expected 15-20% boost and newer instructions it would stay current for longer. The only reason I could see is that you have a dead system or something really old. Even if you have a Q6600 you could probably hold out for a couple more months.

If it IS a dead system, get the 3770k

Phenom ii x4 which will go to a friend of mine.

Thanks everyone.. I am now getting a 3770k and was planning on getting the Gigabyte Windforce 7970 regardless of my CPU. It's just that my mate has been talking be out of getting an i7 since I said I would. rolleyes.gif He reads OCN so I really appreciate this thumb.gif
