I'm looking at those canons you linked me to, the Sony iI originally mentioned and an Olympus. Probably an SX500 or sx40, or possibly an olympus SP-810UZ.

sounds good. the Sony your looking at my daughters friend has one and it seems too be giving some trouble with color so you might want too research that a little more but she might have just got one with a bad cmos sensor or she dropped it.biggrin.gif

Have you thought about buying a used entry level dslr?
I know you said you weren't interested and they certainly can be pricey new however...
I just picked up a Canon EOS Rebel XS used with only 8000 actuations for $180, and just using all auto I can see a huge difference in quality/sharpness of pix with the lens it came with. New Telephoto/Zoom coming today. biggrin.gif
It really isn't that much bigger than my point and shoot Fuji S 4200. But takes a better pic.

Thanks for the tip, I haven't considered one. I would have a hard time buying something like that used, especially with my limited knowledge of cameras. I also don't like buying most electronics used...

The rx100 is by far the most magnificent ps I have ever used. It really is hard to tell pictures from the rx100 and a dslr. If you want a ps this is the one to get, if you have the money.

Bridge cameras (like hx200v) will have much longer zooms but they are roughly the size of a entry level dslr and bigger the mirrorless options. I personally would recommend against bridge cameras.

I've read about that RX100, Unfortunately its out of the budget. I have to go to a store to look at some of these, Do DSLRs generally have auto focus modes as well as manual? If these middle of the category road cameras are that big, i might look for something smaller. I would say the one thing i didnt like about the rx100 was the low optical zoom, Id like something more, but don't need extreme zoom either.

You might actually look into the Olympus PEN line of mirrorless cameras. There's a wide variety of lenses available, and the cameras are tiny and don't weigh that much.

all DSLR cameras have up too 7 auto modes such as full auto, landscape, portrait, closeup, sports, night, etc. then they have up 7 manual modes where you can set the shot up they way you want it too look.
I enjoy my Canon 40D DSLR wouldn't use anything but DSLR.

the rx100 is pretty pricey for a PS, but the quality is definitely there.

low end dslr have all the auto modes you would see in a PS. once you go high end you lose the auto modes and get custom modes (where you can preset settings).

you need to figure out which is more important to you, size or quality cause you cant have both in photography.

you can have a bridge/dslr/mirrorless which will give you higher quality photos but are going to be big, and even small small mirrorless cameras get large quick when you throw on a high quality zoom.
then there are some smaller PS which have pretty good amounts of zoom for the camera size (like the canon sx260) but they will lack a bit when it comes to image quality.

thats cause the 40d isnt really a highend camera. 7/5D series only have the greenbox and the 1D series does not have any auto mode.
