CPU died, need buying advice

Thread Starter
Last week I was tinkering with the fans in my case when a loose fan extension cable touched the back of the motherboard and shorted the system. Now it won't boot, no video, no beeps.
I have functioning spare parts except the cpu, I've tested each component and all signs point to a dead cpu, and maybe the mobo as well since I don't have a spare cpu to test it with.

Now I had originally planned to wait until Haswell to upgrade and pass the old parts into my older pc(socket 939, opteron dual core). But not having my main rig working has me itching hard to fix it, can't wait until June.
I can either buy a used($150) or new($200) i7 920 to revive my pc until Haswell or upgrade now to Ivy Bridge and keep it until Broadwell, maybe later. A 3570K and good motherboard combo is around $350 in local stores.

What do you guys think? What would you do?

150 bucks now, upgrade to Haswell would be my opinion. Would be really sweet if you could test the motherboard to verify it's the chip that's the problem. Although in my experiences, if the motherboard doesn't light up at all it's a problem with the motherboard, if the motherboard's lights come on it tends to be a chip problem. But that's just me

The mobo lights up, with the dead cpu installed only 2/16 phase LEDs light up, but all 16/16 light up with the socket empty.

agreed^

also i recently killed my CPU but i could norrow it down as i have a spare. as mentioned do any of the motherborad ligts come on? that may help determining if it is the mtherboard. also try removing the RAM, even with a dead CPU i found that you should hear a series of beeps like 1 long - 3 short - 1 long. could also determine if its the CPU or mobo.

[edit] just saw your post aot the lights, sounds like te CPU to me.

What does your manual say about only 2/16 LEDs being lit?

::edit:: your manual won't tell you anything wrong with 2/16 because those are phase power mode LEDs. On the bottom right side of the motherboard, should be two LEDs that should give off different combinations of numbers/letters. You can use your manual to trouble-shoot with that possibly...

Screenshot of manual attached for reference

Yea, just quickly went through the pdf manual, they all used to lit up before I screwed up.
I haven't payed much attention to the debug indicator while testing, I'm currently at work so I'll test it again when I get home to see what it shows.

might be differences in mobo's tho when i determined that my CPU was dead, i tried the dead CPU without RAM and had the series of beeps. wait and see what the debug LED code is when you get home. quite possibly it could be the motherboard.

Ok, just got home and turned it on. Debug lights don't turn on.

I think I'll get the used i7 920, hope it's still in good condition for overclocking.

Thanks guys
