x6 1055T, stock cooler and temps.

Hey, so I built a rig for my littlebrother with a phenom II x6 1055T, I´m using a stock-cooler as I know he isnt going to overclock, I also have 2 exhaust fans, one on the roof, one in the back and they push decent amount of hot air out of the case.

So I´m testing it right now and at stock-speeds I´m idling @ 39c, if I watch some stream I hit ~48c and after 2mins of prime I already hit 59c, havent tried any gaming yet as I´m not sure if these temps are in the safe area....I know that 62c is max AMD recommended temperature, but what do my temps sound to you? Should I be worried, normal for stock-cooler?

Thanks

Don't worry, you won't get the temps you get in stress tests in everyday use.

My friend has a AMD 965BE on stock everything, and it will go over 70C during stress tests. But all she do was gaming and it never cause a problem.

If you still think the temperature is high, then you can lower the voltage by quite a bit.

My FX6100 comes at 1.3V, but I can lower it all the way down to 1.2V stable.

OK, I downloaded the Crysis-SP demo, played 10-15minutes, and cpu hit 61c...Max cpu-voltage 1,440v, thats the turbo-voltage I assume.

If I turn turbo off, will it run at lower voltage then? I used to run this excact same cpu+cooler on my rig, I remember it hitting low 60s at the times, is the stock-cooler really that bad? These temps arent in the safe area, arent they? I know that if I would play BF3-MP on this config, it would probably hit 65-70c :/

Yea, I already reseated the cooler, infact before reseating and adding the 2nd fan, I was idling at mid 50s

So, I disabled the turbo and the max Vcore is now at 1,308V, which I assume is on the high side for 2,8Ghz? Anyway, my Crysis-temps dropped from 61 to 55 by just disabling the turbo, I might try adding the 3rd exhaust-fan tomorrow.

Thx for the help so far

OK, so as I dont have that much expierence with AMD-chips, how much I should be able to undervolt it? Right now it hits 1,308V max under full load @stock 2,8Ghz, I played some Bad company 2 multiplayer and temps went up to 60c in less than 5minutes...

But shouldnt stock-cooler be good enough to cool the cpu down at stock-settings? I´ve already added 1 extra-fan, disabled turbo and it still gives these temps...Or should I just not worry and let it run at >60c?

Up to 65°C should be fine. Phenom II cpu's usually undervolt to 1.2-1.25V.

Your temps are fine, you can't expect a lot from the stock cooler, if you want, I can tell you how to mod the fan on the heatsink if your up for it, pretty easy job, but it will greatly reduce those tempatures!

Even though AMD says 62C is the max safe tempature, it would be fine going beyond that, if your running at stock clocks and voltages that is, 95W versions of the Phenom X6 can run up to 72C, so just make 72C as your limit, I myself ignore the 62C limit and I follow the 72C from 95W versions, even though I'm using the 125W version.

EDIT: The fan on the stock heatsink, remove it, you will see a thermal diode underneath the fan, cut the tip off and twist both the wires together, solder or wrap a little foil around it, this will make the fan run at 100% you would have to control it with a fan profile application or change the fan profile around in the BIOS.

it will run around 7000 RPM

Little update: we tested BF3-multiplayer, and after ~2 hours of gaming max cpu-temps were 60c, so it should be safe?
Yup, it's safe, it's when the CPU is overclocked you should be worried, but seeing as it's running on stock clocks and voltage, you should be fine

The temps are normal an I see that you have managed to get them down a bit with some settings adjustments. But I would still consider getting an aftermarket cooler for that extra cooling. A Hyper 212+/Evo can be had for about $30. Which is cheap for the performance that you will get out of it. I would seriously look into it.
