Modernizing my server

Thread Starter
Summer is just around the corner, and with the temperatures we've had in Oklahoma the last 2 years, I'm looking to cut back on my electricity bill this time around. This means getting something a little more economic than what my server is using now.

Current parts:
XFX 780i motherboard
4 x 1gb Hyper-x DDR2
Q6600 G0 with Hyper TX3 cooler (single stock fan)
PERC 5/i
6 x Seagate ST3500630NS/641NS (I think 2 are the 641NS) - RAID10 for all my files.
2 x WD Raptor 36gb (the old SATA 1.5 versions) - RAID0 for OS
OCZ 650w (I think it's a GamerXStream)
All this sitting in a Rosewill RSV-L4000 4U case.

What it's used for:
Ubuntu Server 12.04
SABnzbd/SickBeard/Couch Potato/Transmission
SAMBA
OpenVPN AS
Plex (in the near future)
Syncing home directory to Amazon S3 nightly, and a full OS backup weekly to S3.

I know I am not utilizing the Q6600 for what I am doing, and I don't really have a use for it and the 780i. I just had these parts laying around, and the Rosewill case was recently on sale, and I wanted something that would hold a handful of drives. This also means I'm wasting power by letting a Q6600 idle about 75% of the time, 24/7.

My question is, what kind of setup should I be looking at that will run what I have, application-wise, and not suck up all my power? I don't care if it's AMD or Intel, as long as it will play nicely with my PERC, has at least 1 gigabit NIC, probably no more than 4gb of memory, and preferrably has some form of onboard video (so I can get rid of this ugly 128mb ATI card). No preference on form factor since I've got a good amount of space.

I have found a newer model Raptor (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=WD800HLFS-NDW-R&cat=HDD), that can replace my 2 aging OS drives. I would like to be able to fund this with whatever money I can make from selling the current stuff here, so I'm sort of on a budget. I also know there's probably someone on here that can make more use of a G0 than running SAMBA shares all day.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

You will probably be looking at an i5 3570k or i3 3225. Both have integrated GPU so no problem there, the i3 will handle all that because of hyperthreading but the 3570k will do all that quicker due to native 4 cores, they both use more or less the same power (i5 a bit more) and when paired with a Z77 board you can Under-volt it for it to use less power (a bit less power though)

The i3 is equivalent/better than the Q6600 in everything except multi threaded things due to native 4 cores while the 3570k will dominate it all.

AMD is sadly out of question because their processors use a lot more power (125watt comapred to 70ish)

What do you think OP?

Looking at current AMD cpus on Newegg show a lot of them at 65w. I'm actually trying to downgrade, so anything equal to the Q6600 would not be ideal, as the extra processing power likely would get utilized. I know this exact setup will work on a dual core, since I was previously using a Dell Optiplex 755 with an E4500.

Sorry but the i3, even though it is equal in performance, only uses half teh power of a Q6600 at full load.

The Q6600 uses 105Watts at full load

the i3 3225 uses 55 at full load

That is almost half! But it still offers the same performance!

Please respond back OP

Either a Pentium G or a Core i3 would do you just fine. Stick power saving features on and it'll barely use any power.

Samsung wonder ram to go with that, any 1155 board will do.

Looking at the specs for the i3, it looks good as far as power consumption goes, but I guess what I'm trying to say is, it looks like it's more than what I need. I'm not looking for something modern that will match the Q6600, I'm looking for something modern with less processing power than that.

Plus, current price shows $144 on Newegg. I'm trying to purchase new stuff with money that I make off my current stuff. I don't think I can get enough to cover that processor, plus ram and a motherboard.
