questions regarding FX-4170

Thread Starter
hello,
I currently have OC'd my 4170 to 4.6 and it seems stable (2 hours of prime , max temp was 53 , with no throttling. been running the system for the last week with no hangs or crashes)..

I have two questions;

1. i have received a relatively small amount of money and want to upgrade my under powered GFX card. I have been looking around and found the " Nvidia 670 GTX". Does anybody have any idea if my current CPU set up would "bottleneck" this card?

2.i am also looking at water cooling, and would i be able to realistically be able to hit 5 Ghz, on my CPU using Corsair Hydro Series (H80 or H100) ?, if not what would i need too be able to do that ?

Sorry for any grammar or spelling mistakes, but i have mild dyslexic tendencies, (and i'm tired tongue.gif ) .

You dont want to spend $100 in cooling a CPU that is $100. You are better off upgrading to some faster CPU if you dont want to bottleneck that GTX670.

Fair point. But i'm on a tight budget and from what i have read the FX series (which i didn't know before buying my CPU), is worthless until the FX-8xxx , where the OC capabilities make it ok. i defiantly cant afford a new motherboard and CPU to move to intel.

so that said, my 2 questions still remain.

if i brought the 670 will it bottle neck on my CPU running at 4.6 Ghz, and will i be able to reach 5 Ghz with the H series ?

and i guess would 5 Ghz be enough not to affect the 670 ?

hitting 5ghz also depends on your motherboard, whether or not it can provide the power needed. also your chip may not be capable of reaching those speeds stable 24/7.
if you're going to spend money on a nice gpu get the 8320 instead, and get yourself something like a 7850.

if you post the components of your system we can better judge what is a good upgrade for you.

i have pieced this PC tougher whilst not having a job;

Motherboard
ASUSTek m5a78l-m/usb3

PSU
when i order my new card i will also order a new
XFX PRO Series 650 / 550 Watts (depending on what else get replaced ).

RAM
8GB @ 1800 mhz ( i think )

Storage ?
2 x 60 GB SSD
1 x 250 GB HDD

Please avoid saying throw it all out lol.

i doubt you'll reach 5ghz on that motherboard.
something more like this:
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131873
6+2 power phase and heatsinked.

i've never heard anything good about an xfx power supply
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139028

this should get you started with overclocking, pair them with an 8320 and you'll be ready for any graphics card.

yeah i dont see how i can afford all this new stuff should i just get an i7k when im at it lol. i mean there no way i can get 3 new components.

so keeping my old MB, would getiing the fx 8350 and a cheaper GFX card like 8320, give me better FPS than my current CPU and a more expensive GPU like the 670 ?

also the PSU

EDIT:

i have found " AMD FX 8-CORE (FX-8320) 3.5GHz Processor 16MB" for a £130.00 inc VAT,
that would leave me with about £170 on a GFX card. is there a better model than 7850 , for that price range i could maybe psh upto 200£ if it made a huge leap in performance.

the fx8320 is 169 (or cheaper in some cases) than the fx8350 (60$ more) and will give you better fps than your fx4170.

your motherboard is not designed for overclocking, either putting heatsinks on your vrms with a fan or replacing your motherboard are something you should consider, you should also check the manufacturers website whether or not your board supports 95w or 125w cpus.

if you're worried about 'bottlenecking' you should consider upgrading your motherboard/cpu/power supply combination.
which graphics card do you have now? the gtx 670 would be overkill and definitely be 'bottlenecked' by your cpu. consider a Radeon 7850 or the like to match your cpu.

that psu looks decent, but i believe you can get better for your money.

OK, i'm sorry i must not be explain it well.
my budget is 360 uk £'s.
i'm not overly concerned with OC (if i can then it's nice).
i want to be able to play BF3,Skyrim, Blk ops 2 etc at 1080p with at a decent FPS (55 +, preff 60 +)
60 £ will need to go on a new PSU.
this leaves me with 300 / 320 £'s to do this with.
As the only Problem with the Motherboard is from an OC point of view, i can for the moment live with that. (current CPU is 124 W)

now, with the remaining money what is the best way to spend it to achieve my goal ?

if i have asked this in the wrong forum then i am sorry, sorry for waisting your time.
I am going to sleep ,

honestly getting an 8320 will make a definite difference in gaming, only skyrim doesn't fair well with amd cpus.
get the 8320 and do some research on graphics cards, in my opinion you don't need a gtx670, something closer to a gtx660 or 7870 is closer to what you should get, and fits in your budget.

hope i answered some of your questions.
