What? Why sell an i3, a mobo, 8GB of RAM, and a caviar blue for only 80 pound? That is ridiculous. lol

That set up + the HDDs and a RAID card and his PSU exceed his needs for what he wants to accomplish.

thing is... he hasnt got enough sata connectors, offcourse he may get more than £80, he might get over £200, the eBay market is always changing you know...

like i said...get a perc 5/i for cheap and run a raid 5 array, bam SATA port issue fixed. I'm running an extremely similar server to what his could be and it is far more than enough for my needs. Game hosting as well. What really matters is the network connection.

If anything swap out the mobo (and it looks like it uses laptop RAM?) and get a different H61 board or similar.

+1 on the PERC.

If you're going to be running Linux, then for heaven's sake move to a hardware raid card, it's just easier, and a heck of a lot safer. Pretty much all of the software raid solutions I've seen only rebuild Raid arrays in Windows unless you like pulling teeth. If you do go software, then use your distro to manage the raid array and don't trust the controller to do it.

But in all reality you can get a PERC for 20-50 bucks, and it's a true hardware raid card with an LSI chipset. Get yourself a SAS to sata expander cable and you're done. Best of all is the fact that the raid card does 99 percent of the work instead of asking the CPU to do it.

I'll look into a PERC card when I get home tonight. That's looking like a good option. Honestly, if I'm not moving to ECC, I think I'm going to stick with the 2120T at least. I really like how low power it is. My concerns with cannibalizing the rig were the number of SATA ports and the lack of ECC.

Thanks for all the advice, this is looking like I won't be spending much which is always good.

Well, ECC is a nice to have feature, but it doesn't sound like you're doing anything mission critical and you've only got 8GB of ram. Just keep it stock and you should be okay. If you do move to ECC, then go AMD, as they don't cripple ECC functionality.
