Does Overclocking make that much of a difference?

I realize that this is probably the worst/stupidest question to ask but:

Does overclocking make that much of a difference... yes yes, I can see the difference in timing on your stress tests and all that...but no one "plays" stress tests... we play games, or run intensive programs to accomplish things....

So my question is really: is boosting your cpu speed by 300mhz -600mhz going to make that much of a difference in games/intensive applications?

I have upped my P4 2.4ghz to a 2.7ghz and ran the same game with these settings. I didn't notice any real difference in the speed of the game, or even the cleanliness... (game (Gothic 3) runs slightly "choppy" on medium settings)

Anywho, looking into a watercooled setup in order to boost it above 3.0ghz to see if there is any more noticeable difference.

For you, overclocking your cpu isn't going to make a big diffrence because your graphics card is probably the limiting factor. If you overclocked your graphics, you would probably see a jump.

When I overclocked my CPU, I saw a jump in the speed in general. My graphics card is good, but not amazing, so overclocking it would also help.

Overclocking will make a difference in the time it takes to do most anything. If you're playing a game and your graphics card is limiting you, overclocking your CPU won't make much of a difference because your gpu won't be able to keep up. If you overclock it, you'll see the jump while playing.

My CPU does just fine on medium physics settings on fear. but my GPU was going to FPSs like below 25, so I OC'd my GPU and now I rarely get down to 25 FPS in fear.

How would I go about overclocking my graphics card?

AGP 8x BFG 256mb 6200 OC... it came overclocked out of the case... but how would I start to overclock it?

People tell me it is bad idea to do that, because it will heat it beyond capabilities...

any idea's?

I'll just tell you this: You'll get more FPS per MHz the more Pixel Pipelines you have. So even if you overclock your card by 30%, you aren't going to see a large difference.

But pixel pipelines, buffer size, ram size... all these components affect the speed and graphical capabilities... so much to take into consideration!
