EVGA 680i hot hot

Thread Starter
Has anyone figured out a way to cool this board down? I upgraded from a foxconn for my C2D because I couldn't get it to overclock. Well the options are numerous for the 680i, but at idle my CPU is reading 38 degrees Celsius, which is only 10 degrees higher than on my foxconn (both of these readings are stock settings). I figure it must be that MCP fan blowing the hot air into the CPU, because nothing else has changed. I'm going to run down to the store and buy some fans and try to place them differently and see how that works.

Try and get an aftermarket northbridge cooler for the 680i chip.

I'm not really sure if the temperature sensor on the board is correct at this point. I bought 2 more 120mm fans. So the total number of fans I have running is 3x 120mm, 2x 92mm, the MCP fan that comes with it, and the CPU cooler (Artic Cooler 7).

I've moved all these fans around and under no circumstance will it drop the CPU temp below 38/40 degrees C at idle, even with the side of the case open. My CPU temp at idle right now is 43, thats 15 degrees C above what the previous board was.

Taking off the MCP fan and letting it be passively cooled, and thus not blowing the air onto the CPU still yields a temperature of 40-43 degrees C. And thats with a 80mm fan blowing over the stock northbridge heatsink.

It pretty much feels like a tornado around my CPU

I'm beginning to think the temperature sensor on this board is wrong.

I bought additional fans and the temperatures still read way too hot. I've now got 2X 120mm fans blowing air from the front to the back. 1x 120mm fan blowing air out the side. 1x 120mm fan and 1x92mm fan blowing air out the back. My Arctic Freezer 7 CPU cooler and a 80mm fan blowing air off the northbridge out the back. My temps did not drop one bit. CPU is still at 40/45 degrees C stock speeds.

In the bios it says the northbridge is at 45/50 degrees C, which is roughly 115/120 degrees F... I would think that it at least slightly uncomfortable to the touch, however if you touch the heatpipe its actually cold to the touch, like literally... cold... .

I've cleaned my CPU heatsink twice with alcohol and reapplied AS5. I don't know any other explaination other than the temperature sensor has to be off.

wheres the computer at in your house? try bringing it somewhere you know that will be cooler then at least you'll be able to tell if lower temps are possible. btw i'm about to get that board so i hope this works out for you.

What software are you using to monitor the temps? Also I assume you have the northbridge fan mounted.

The computer is in my office, where the temperature is between 70-75 degrees F. The computer hasn't moved though, it was in the exact same place, with the exact same setup, only using a Foxconn motherboard, and the temps were 10-13 degrees lower.

Yeah the northbridge fan is mounted.
I've tried Nvidia monitor and Speedfan, which both read the same temp. Intel's TAT reads slightly lower temps at idle, but just about the same temps at full load. The bios is generally 5-7 degrees C. cooler.

I've got a 8800gtx which covers up the southbridge, so I can't use an aftermarket heatsink for the southbridge - which has a heatpipe coming out of it connecting to the northbridge. The board requires that the video card be put in PCIE slot 1 if you're not running SLI, so I can't move the video card.

I've tried to keep up with some responses on the evga forums, but noone really has an answer and the temps seem to be quite varied. I don't think there is anything wrong with my cooling, I've got a tornado going on in my case, I think either the board temperature sensors are wrong, or the north/south bridge pumps out way too much heat. Either way, my load temps hover around 60 degrees C stock settings, I don't really feel comfortable stressing the CPU at over 60 degrees and I havent even turned my computer on for more than 20 minutes, I think I'm just gonna RMA the board.

You could mount a fan in front of the southbridge. I had to do that on my Asus A8N32 with my sli'd cards as my motherboard temps went form 30c to 45C when I added a second card (it covered the southbridge)

Just for fun, heres a pic of my case with the millions of fans. I the CPU down to 34 degrees C at bootup, but after 10 minutes of idle it was up to 40-43, over 60 at full load running orthos.

The cords don't restrict airflow as it might look at that angle in the picture, they are mostly tucked away at the top/sides.

At this point these temps are just really ridiculous, and I can't return the board, it's so new newegg only has a replacement on it, and after moving fans for a cumulative 6 hours, I'm kinda tired of dealing with it.
