[MG] Intel Says YOLO And Brings The Yolo To Africa - Page 7

Nothing is as simple as you think here. But honestly, if we had Obama for 8 years instead of USA - our country would probably look a lot better than it is.
Mining isn't in the stone-age, just the workers are constantly striking violently for more wages - and the government just doesn't know what to do. No one has set up shop to exploit the resources other than our government. Heck, we only have 1 nuclear powerplant in the Western Cape, the rest is coal powered. Simply because our government didn't care.
The people aren't starving, they're just unhappy and angry at the government. The only reason the ANC is in power still is because they 'brain-wash' the mass uneducated population to vote for them. (ie; they go out and tell people they HAVE to vote for ANC, and they do not indicate that they actually have a choice).

That being said, I still believe that there are some of the most driven, enthusiastic and brilliant people in this country. Without them pushing forward to help further develop our country, we would be lost.

Hmm while i don't agree with your assesment of how economic wealth distribution works in reality, South Africa and the rest of the southern parts of africa is the exception rather than the rule. While Angola, Botswana, Namibia and even Zimbabwe (deficits and internal crazyness aside) are fairly well developed countries industrially speaking.
The so called "stone age" (more likely 19th century) techniques found on the african continent are prevalent in the less developed and unaccessible parts such as the Congo and northern Sahel.
Mining isn't what directly develops an area or country, it's the businesses around it and the skilled people and the facilities rwuired to train skilled people that drives development. For most african nations, mining could be an important resource, never as important as engery though but it's more likely that the economical development will come from urban areas rather than natural resources.
IF my predicitions are correct, stuff like this is vital to continued progress. Most sub saharan african countries have a mere backbone of infrastructure when it comes to landlines, the continent is driven by wireless development. Tap into that market and you'll be set.

And because you went to that one place (most likely as part of a tour or something similar, am I right?) you assumed that isolated case represents the rest of the country as a whole. Right?

I think people see Africa as something like this biggrin.gif

Does the article state how Intel came up with the name of YOLO?

Seems like quite a unimaginative name really...but to each their own smile.gif

Does YOLO mean anything in any languages found in Africa? Just curious if we will see another disaster like when GM tried to sell the Chevy Nova in Mexico.

Don't think it means anything in any one of our 11 languages. Even the English speaking South Africans look at you funny if you say YOLO biggrin.gif

I think the chances of it meaning anything offensive or meaningful in the rest of the African countries are very slim (but I could be wrong)

Why are you still on about SA when its clear he's talking about countries other than yours? SA is by far not the rule for the rest of the continent, its practically the only country that could be considered developed by Western standards until you get to Northern Africa.

Not everyone in Africa is starving to death you know. If there really wasn't enough wealth going around for people to be able to afford this then there'd be no reason to release it at all as there'd be no market for it and therefore wasted R&D cash and no profit.

Yes I am aware that some areas are well off as I am a South African myself. However, the majority of the region is not and this is just big corporations taking greed to the next level by trying to extend their hand as far as possible. It is childish and sickening.

No one is forcing anyone to buy it... I highly doubt anyone is stupid enough to buy a smartphone before they buy food.

That said, that type of crap is already common enough in America... I know a guy who lives in a room in an apartment in a housing project and has thousands upon thousands of dollars worth of electronics and expensive clothing.
