No one is forcing anyone to buy it... I highly doubt anyone is stupid enough to buy a smartphone before they buy food.

That said, that type of crap is already common enough in America... I know a guy who lives in a room in an apartment in a housing project and has thousands upon thousands of dollars worth of electronics and expensive clothing.

yes but having a large corporation enter a poorish country creating possible needs in my opinion is bad. I agree with your comment on america I know people that live off of welfare and spend their money in a dumb way as well. It comes down to common sense for the consumer in the end, but creating the need i feel is not a solution to help a nation increase is standards or join the western way.

The smartphone is in many ways the equivalent of computers. Without a powergrid and landlines, smartphones enable people to connect to the web and well do stuff. like pay bills (which they already can with old dumbphones in many african countries.)

It's not about creating a need, it's about supplying a solution.

Yeah, smart phones don't create any needs. If a person "needs" to make a phone call...they will make a phone call. If they "need" to send an email...they will send an email. If they "need" to play angry birds...they will fire up their Chrome browser. Now you may get so used to having all this ability in your coat pocket that it feels like you need it, but we did all this before the smart phones came along...though the Angry Bird thing was a little different since you had to throw real birds at live hogs.

it's not like in Europe, Asua or America (south and north) where Smartphones are an addition to computers and landlines. The difference is that most parts of the african countriside lacks the neccessary infrastructure to support computers let alone landlines.
Not many people did the stuff you mention before "smartphones"

Well, I'd assume that the phones are going to be sold in the areas that can provide the services needed for the phone to operate. Save for some of the central regions, I've heard that most every country in Africa will at least have a couple modern cities. I've personally used broad band in Ethiopia and Somalia for example...and that was like...six years ago. I was jealous of it because it was better than what I had at home.

i mean sure you could argue that people in the third world have more pressing problems than not being to check facebook on the go or play angry birds. but hey, yolo

My advice to you bro, explore the world and get to know places. Am in Kenya proud and happy to own a Yolo phone.. i have no time to debate on the meaning of the word, i need a good phone and it works for me just fine.

Most people think Africa is all about death, disease, poverty, war etc. but clever people take their time to explore the world. Why would Intel choose Kenya for the launch? of all the African countries, why Kenya? Ever heard of Safaricom? That's the company Intel partnered with. They are the pioneers of mobile money transfers, the first in the world and sadly for you, they are an African company.
