Allocating more RAM to an HD 4000 (using an i5-3570K)

I was speaking to some acquaintances of mine about my experience with Intel HD graphics, they were telling me that the HD 4000 is supposed to be able to handle games like Skyrim and Crysis 2 even at medium graphics. I had heard these claims (and seen the reviews claiming them), and that's actually what made me decide to use integrated graphics to start off my first rig. I wanted to build my desktop and use the HD 4000 for as long as I could. During that time I would save up my money and eventually buy a kickass discrete card.

In practice, the HD 4000 was crap, it couldn't run anything. Even Starcraft 2 at the lowest graphics would crash repeatedly. Terraria would get notably sluggish when I tried to play in full screen. At first I thought it was bad drivers, but then how had all those reviewers got such high frame rates and stable benchmarks using drivers that were even more preliminary in the beta period? So my friends told me "Well how much RAM did you allocate to the iGPU?" When I said I didn't know I had to do that they all just laughed, acting like it was the most obvious thing in the world. Is this true, or are they yanking my chain? It's not so much a big deal anymore because I gave up on the HD 4000 a few days in and just bought myself a GTX 670 (which is happily purring away in my rig at the moment). But if I ever need to go back to integrated graphics, I'd like to know where I stand in regards to RAM allocation.

Based on what I saw in this discussion thread: http://www.overclock.net/t/1289309/intel-hd4000-3770-internal-grapphics-memory-size it doesn't seem like it's THAT obvious that one should allocate more RAM. And really, if it was that necessary and obvious, why doesn't the CPU do it automatically when it sees you don't have any discrete GPU? For the record, I have 16GB of RAM, so that should be plenty to spare.

The HD4000 can only allocate 512gb MAX @ 8gb(256mb for under 8gb)What you can do is overclock the GPU cores for it to perform better, this can sometimes give you 20% improvment.

I see, but my question isn't really about how to allocate more RAM (though that may be useful some time in the future). What I really want to know is, is it standard to have to do so? Does everyone who build their own PC, and who decided to utilize the iGPU, always allocate more RAM? That's what my co-workers were telling me, and I found that surprising because in all of the How-Tos and guides I read online I had never heard of allocating more RAM for it.

No it does it automatically, It allocates 512mb of RAM if you have 8gbs of RAM, and 256mb if you ahve under 8gb. Windows is programmed to do so, but for example Linux, I think you can choose to add more if you wish

So... me not allocating the RAM myself would not account for how badly the HD 4000 was handling my simple games?

But... You could overclock the GPU which can sometimes give you 20%+ power

I just built an i5-3570k system last night. In the BIOS, I set the amount of memory to be used by the Intel HD Graphics 4000 system.
The net result is that the system current shows:
- Minimum memory: 128 MB
- Maximum memory: 1760 MB
- In use: 355 MB

It is successfully running two monitors at 1900 x 1200. All seems to be well.
