Any other materials that stay naturally cool to the touch? I'm thinking something less dust prone would be good as well.

Although stone is cooler to the touch and if you call around to local countertop places you may get scrap for cheap, I used a slab of butcher block - funny, it actually came from IKEA but I don't think they make it any more. It matches all my furniture:

Honestly I would go with a piece of wood because it would be cheap and stay decently cool.

How about a caster base designed so you can access the bottom filters? Or could just bolt casters onto case.
